Nhung Kim Nguyen Obituary

With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Mrs. Anna Nhung Kim Nguyen, known to many of us as "Cô 9" [Auntie 9] or as "Mợ 3" [Auntie 3], our loving and devoted mother and grandmother to all whose lives she touched, on October 18, 2021. She was called home to the Lord during her 87th year on earth and left us while sleeping peacefully at her residence in Lorton, Virginia, USA. Born in Thới An (Ô Môn, Cần Thơ, Vietnam), she witnessed many horrifying events in her little world, including the Ba Cụt’s massacre and the burning down of her village, including her house. Later, she went to a nursing school in Cần Thơ City and became a nurse, serving the city hospital during the war. She met a caring male nurse, Nghĩa Nhựt Nguyễn, who happened to save her dad from the "mad dog" disease. After the 21st rabies shot, her dad arranged the marriage for the couple! Nhung and Nghĩa gave birth to six children--Nhựt Dũng, Nhựt Sơn, Kim Loan, Kim Hồng, Nhựt Trí, and Kim Hương. After the Fall of Saigon in 1975, and after their first two sons died, the couple determined to escape from Vietnam. Without any deterrence from her husband’s two failed attempts to escape and imprisonments, by herself, she led her remaining children to escape from Vietnam to Indonesia by boat, and they were accepted to the USA as refugees. Predeceased by her beloved husband, she and her four children began their lives in this new land. Overcoming many life challenges, she continued to fill her home with sacrifice, selflessness, love, and warmth. She made and kept her promise of "Not Making Another Step" to focus on caring for her young. Taking both roles of a provider and a homemaker, she, during the day, worked in the food service at the school where she could be near her daughter, and she worked as a custodian in the late evenings. She loved to cook and to do needlework while caring for her family, including raising and teaching her grandchildren. Most of all, her lifelong courage and determination were accentuated during her final ten months. After she survived the Covid-19 infection in December 2020, she returned to the hospital for treatment of pneumonia in January 2021. Then, her body took punches from multiple angles of diabetes, urinary tract infection, hypertension, congestive heart failure, kidney failure, and gallbladder infection. She fought the good fight, and she left behind her legacy which is what she taught each of her children and grandchildren about persistence and perseverance and being good followers of Jesus Christ. Her presence is still in our hearts. We can still meet her in our dreams, and the best part is that we all will meet her later in heaven where time is no longer a limiting factor. A celebration of Mrs. Nhung Nguyen’s life will be held at Fairfax Memorial Funeral Home on Friday, October 29, 2021, from 12 noon to 2:00 PM for private family members and from 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM for public viewing. A Catholic Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Martyrs of Vietnam Catholic Church on Saturday, October 30, 2021, from 10:00AM - 11:00AM. The Burial Ceremony will take place at Fairfax Memorial Park on Saturday, October 30, 2021, from 11:15AM - 11:45AM.
