Nancy J. McSweeney

South Portland – Nancy J. McSweeney, 81, died on Tuesday, October 12, 2021, in Freeport. Nancy was born on March 20, 1940, in Portland, the daughter of the late Walter and Alice (Orr) Wheeler. She grew up in Portland where she graduated from Portland High School in the Class of 1958, and started her career in banking. In the late 1970’s, Nancy met Ed McSweeney at a Memorial Day Picnic. Neither Ed nor Nancy was aware, but that day sparked the beginning of a nearly 40-year marriage. Ed and Nancy were married on May 17, 1980. Together, they lived in Connecticut and enjoyed traveling the world with dear friends, Father Bill McCarthy & Sister Bernadette Sheldon, on pilgrimages during their employment with My Father’s House Retreat Center in Connecticut. Nancy retired from banking in the early 1990’s and managed a children’s store shortly after. Ed and Nancy loved their time in Connecticut, but decided to move to Maine in 2007 to live with Nancy’s chosen sister, Mary Alice Higgins. Nancy was a devout communicant of Holy Cross Church. Nancy was predeceased by her husband, Ed McSweeney in 2018; a sister, Marjorie Tice. She will be missed by her very dear friend, Mary Alice Higgins of South Portland; niece, Susan Markham and husband Bill of CT; sisters in law, Mary McSweeney of NC, JoAnn Naldi and husband Richard of NC, Linda Harrison of CT; and cousins. Visiting hours celebrating Nancy’s life will be held from 11AM-12PM, on Friday, October 22, 2021, at the Conroy-Tully Walker South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland.
