David Waigand, 72, of Thayer, died Friday, October 15, 2021 at EveryStep Greater Regional Hospice House in Creston. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Friday October 22, 2021 at St. Edwards Catholic Church in Afton. Father Adam Westphal and Rev. Jim Morris will officiate. The Service will be live streamed found at powersfh.com on a link at events. Open visitation will be 2-7 p.m. on Thursday October 21 with family receiving friends from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday at Powers Funeral Home in Afton. There will be a rosary service at 7 p.m. Thursday at Powers Funeral Home in Afton. In lieu of flowers, memorials are kindly suggested to the EveryStep Hospice or the Afton Fire Department. Online condolences can be made at www.powersfh.com David Alois Waigand, son of Joseph P. Waigand and Edith A. (Thompson) Waigand, was born on October 27, 1948 in Creston, Iowa. He attended country school where his mother taught at the Talmage Hill Country School, he later graduated from East Union High School in 1966. He also graduated from SWCC before going on to study at the University of Nebraska and Iowa State University. On November 30, 1974, David was united in marriage to Helen M. Wagner at the All Saints Catholic Church in Stuart. They settled on the family farm near Thayer where he loved farming with his brother Phil. David also loved spending time with Helen, his kids and family, especially the younger kids and babies. When he went to the ball games, he always had plenty of candy to hand out to the kids. David was a member of the St. Edward Catholic Church. Early on he was active with the Knights of Columbus and their bowling team, a board member for many years for the Afton Care Center, Union County Fair Board and the East Union School Board. David had the honor to present his four children their high school diplomas. David is survived by his wife Helen Waigand of Thayer, four children, Michael (wife Stephanie) Waigand of Allen, Texas, Amy Waigand (husband Scott Dullard) of Adel, Tony (wife Elizabeth) Waigand of Creston and Katie Waigand of Littleton, Colo.; his brother Philip (wife Sharon) Waigand of Thayer; 6 grandchildren, Rance, Alexa and Ethan Waigand; Courtney and Brodrick Phelps and Hannah Joy; four sisters-in-law, Mary (husband Jim) Lonsdale and Regina (husband Steve) James, all of Stuart, Betty (husband Dan) Norman of Salina, Kan. and Patty (husband Phil) Bradley of Afton, along with many other nieces, nephews and extended family. David was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Susan Waigand at birth, sister Judy Waigand at birth and Father and Mother-in-law Francis and Virginia Wagner.
