Leon James Holzman was born on September 30, 1938, on the family farm south of Le Mars, Iowa. He was number 10 of 11 children born to Frank and Josephine (Kemp) Holzman. He graduated from Gehlen High School in 1956 and enlisted in Iowa Army National Guard. He served for 6 years before earning an Honorable Discharge. During this time, Leon began farming with his father. Leon and Nancy Pierson were united in marriage on November 14, 1970, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Le Mars. He took over operations of the family when his father, Frank retired. Farming was in his blood and he loved it to his last day. Leon was even lining up the harvest from his hospital bed. He was an animal lover and refused to go to the hospital until the 13 cats and 3 dogs were fed. On the way to the emergency room he rescued a baby kitten left out in the rain. Leon was devoted to feeding the birds and squirrels year round. He was a member of All Saints Catholic Parish and the Knights of Columbus. Leon enjoyed watching all sports, especially the Viking and Chiefs. He liked to visit with his siblings and many friends. Most important was the time he spent with his family. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Nancy Holzman of Le Mars, IA; a son, Dennis Holzman of Le Mars, IA; a daughter and her husband, Julie and Curt Heck of Sioux City, IA; a son and his wife, Travis and Jill Holzman of Le Mars, IA; six grandchildren, Nick Holzman of TX (Holly from Jacksonville, NC), Mike (Anabel) Heck of Sioux City, IA, Austin Heck of Sioux City, IA, Jace, Taia and Isaac Holzman of Le Mars, IA; 5 great-grandchildren, Julieana and Jay Heck, Noah Holzman, Nathan and Charlie Hamilton; sisters, Edna Holzman of Omaha, NE, Betty and Roger Curry of Saratoga, CA, Elaine and Bill Pew of San Marcos, CA; brothers, Clayton and Lois Holzman of Le Mars, IA, Roger Holzman of Houston, TX; sister-in-law, Marian Holzman of Alton, IA; and numerous nieces and nephews.
