Leroy Brinkman

Leroy Edward Brinkman, 91, of Payson, Ill., passed peacefully from this life at 10 p.m. October 14, 2021. Leroy was born December 14, 1929, in Quincy, a son of Lawrence Bernard and Marie Rose Goerlich Brinkman. He married Virginia Mae Stahl on September 28, 1949, at Notre Dame Catholic Church in LaGrange, Mo., and they recently celebrated 72 years of marriage. She survives. Leroy went to St. Francis School in Quincy through 8th grade and attended Notre Dame High School for one year. Leroy worked on the family farm with his father, worked at Packaging Corporation and was employed at Moorman Manufacturing for 29 years, until his retirement in 1992. Leroy was a member of the Payson School Board from 1972 to 1981 and a member of Knights of Columbus. Leroy also farmed and along with his wife, Virginia, maintained a large garden and were known for their strawberry patch. They proudly raised 15 children. Leroy was a devoted husband, father and grandfather, and he enjoyed being active. He also enjoyed coaching the girls Payson Progressors 4-H softball team for many years, including several trips to state tournaments. Leroy regularly attended sporting events, concerts, plays and school gatherings to watch his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Virginia and Leroy were members of St. Boniface Catholic Church and after its closing, they became members of St. Francis Solanus Church. Survivors in addition to his wife, Virginia, include 14 children and their families, Stanley (Joan) Brinkman and children Jean (Justin) Oenning and Shawn; Steven (Linda) Brinkman and children Chad, Troy (Monica) and Lance (Margaret); Marlene Graham and children Clint (Jo), Cristall and Curtis (Kristin); children of Randy (Sandy) Brinkman, Kim Sparks, Craig (Nikki) and Amy; Rodney (Amy Willer) Brinkman and children Anne, Adam and Austin (Krissy); Leann (Jack Moore) Behymer and children Jason Lewton, Anna (James) Lemon and Brian (Michel) Lewton; Cherlyn (Randy) Davis; Charlene Brinkman and children Eric (Angie), Jonathan and Justin (Kelsey) Davis; Kristy (Mark) Jeffers; Kathy Finley and children Marie, Dan (Sarah), Ross (Rose), Jay (Erica) and Jack; Brinton (Rhonda) Brinkman and children Allison and Kaitlyn; Bruce (Rita) Brinkman and children Dustin, Bethany and Ryan; Rebecca (Steve) Conrad and children Kayla (Mark) Hoerr and Klayton; Leroy "Butch" (Rhonda) Brinkman and children Noah (Lacey Roberts), Sam and Lauren; and Virginia "Linn" (Jim) Dingerson and children Nicholas and Danielle. Also surviving are five step-grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren, with one on the way; 13 step-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mildred Venvertloh. Leroy was preceded in death by his parents; a son and daughter-in-law, Randy and Sandy Brinkman; three sons-in-law, Terry Graham, Bill Behymer and Charles Finley; a grandson Alan Lewton; a great-granddaughter and two great-grandsons; two brothers, Kenneth and James (Betty) Brinkman; and a brother-in-law, Lenny Venvertloh. In his final days, Leroy was given exceptional care by Matt Hanlin and the staff at Blessing Hospice, and the family wishes to express their gratitude. Services: 10 a.m. Tuesday, October 19, 2021, at St. Francis Solanus Catholic Church Burial: Calvary Cemetery, Quincy, Illinois Visitation: 3-7 p.m. Monday, October 18, 2021, at St. Francis Solanus Catholic Church, with a wake service at 2:30 p.m. There will be a prayer service for family at 9 a.m. Tuesday at Hansen-Spear Funeral Home.
