George W. Cornelius, 92, of Erie, passed away peacefully on Wednesday October 13, 2021 at Manchester Commons. He was born in Erie on January 15, 1929 a son of the late Henry and Hazel Marie Smith Cornelius. George graduated from Strong Vincent High School in 1947 and went on to graduate from the GE Apprentice Program. He worked as an inspector at GE for 42 years before retiring in 1989. Following retirement he owned a rototilling and field mowing business with his son, Steven. He was an active member of Glenwood United Methodist Church where he served as an usher. He belonged to the Perry Keystone Lodge #392 F&AM, the AASR Valley of Erie, the Order of Demolay Degree of Chevalier, the GE Quarter Century Club, and the GEER Group. He was active in AARP and the PTA with his wife and enjoyed traveling. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Marjorie Stevens Cornelius; one brother, Albert Cornelius; and two sisters, Lillian Morrison and Helen Wood. Survivors include two sons, Steven Cornelius and his wife, Rosemarie "Mia", of Erie and Edwin Cornelius of East Springfield, PA; one daughter, E. Susan Sharra and her husband, Robert, of Florida; two grandchildren, Megan Sanderson and Matthew Sharra and his wife, Kaitlyn; two great granddaughters, Brooklyn and Eleanor; one sister, Gretchen Tice and her husband, Charles, of Mentor, OH; and many nieces and nephews. Friends may call at the Russell C. Schmidt & Son Funeral Home Inc., 5000 Wattsburg Rd., on Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m including a Masonic Service at 7:30 p.m. Funeral services will take place on Tuesday at 10 a.m. with burial to follow in Wintergreen Gorge Cemetery.
