Loretta Morgan

Nellie Loretta Green Morgan, age 90, passed away in Lewisville, TX on Monday, October 11, 2021. Memorial services will be held at 11 am Saturday, October 23, at the First Baptist Church in Mooreland, OK. Burial will follow in Mooreland Cemetery under the direction of Billings Funeral Home.

Loretta was born September 28, 1931, in Sayre, OK to Virgil and Lida Green. In her early days, she lived in communities all over Oklahoma as her father, who was a Baptist minister, served churches all over the state.

She graduated from Felt High School, earning the distinction of class Valedictorian. She attended college as a music major for two years at Oklahoma Baptist University, where she met Jack Morgan. Loretta and Jack were married on June 11, 1950. They celebrated 66 years of marriage before Jack preceded her in death on Dec. 24, 2016.

They had five children, who all survive her. They include (with their spouses): Rebekah and Karrol Nelson, Joel Morgan and Kitty Villa, Margaret and Wes Maat, Joy and Greg Cole, and Jonathan and Elizabeth Morgan.

Loretta took great delight in her 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. She prayed daily for each of her family members.

Loretta is also survived by a brother Willis Green and his wife Pat. Loretta was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Marion Green.

Much of the Morgan family life centered around school. When Jack served as high school principal at Mooreland High School, Loretta served as his secretary and in addition to her other duties, enjoyed pulling pranks with her fellow staff members. Loretta encouraged her children in their academic, musical and athletic pursuits. The family jokes that Loretta, who was chief navigator for family road trips across the country, insisted that Jack stop for every historical marker along the roadside to ensure her children had a sense of their American heritage.

Church was also a large part of Loretta's life. She and Jack were members of First Baptist Church when the current building on Elm Street was built. She was known for staging creative events for special occasions like wedding showers and enjoyed decorating the cakes for those events. Loretta was the church pianist and also served with Jack as a Bible teacher. After retirement, they went to the Philippines as missionaries for two years, followed by a year in Japan. They also taught GED and Bible classes at the prison in Ft. Supply.

In later years, Jack and Loretta moved to Lewisville, TX to be closer to family. Loretta immediately became involved in volunteer activities at the Chin ministry, teaching literacy and English as a second language. Her encouragement enabled these young immigrants to acclimate to their new life in the US and gain the education they needed to thrive here.

Other hobbies included cooking, sewing, reading, doing crossword puzzles and watching OU football and Texas Rangers baseball. Loretta also played a mean game of Spades, passing along her love of competitive fun to future generations.

Loretta Morgan leaves a legacy of faith, humor, perseverance and service to her family and friends.
