Donald "Don" Albert Gummersheimer Obituary

Donald “Don” Albert Gummersheimer of Steelville, MO, age 76 years, 7 months and 24 days, passed away Monday, October 11, 2021 at Meramec Nursing Center in Sullivan. Don was born February 17, 1945 in Belleville, Illinois to William Gummersheimer and Adele Wagner Gummersheimer. He grew up and attended schools in Dupo, Illinois, graduating from the local high school.

Don served honorably in the U.S. Marines from 1964 to 1968 and received a Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with two stars and a Vietnam Campaign Medal. In the military, Don became an Air Traffic Controller and later was employed as a civilian controller for many years in Kansas City. After Don’s military service, he was united in marriage to Elaine Timpe on March 11, 1972. They continued living in the Kansas City area and he eventually went to work as a systems engineer for Sprint. After retiring, Don and Elaine moved to Steelville in 2001 and enjoyed a quieter time of life.

Don was dedicated and very involved in giving his time to many organizations after moving to Steelville. He was a member of the VFW, American Legion, Steelville School Board, Golden Echoes Board and the Steelville Chamber of Commerce Board.  Don was awarded by the Steelville Chamber of Commerce the Steelville Citizen of the Year Award which he was very proud in receiving. Don had a passion for serving his community and did it well.

Don loved reading different genres, but he favored military intelligence and the history of the military. He enjoyed canoeing in the area and especially the Huzzah River. He and Elaine had many traveling memories of the U.S. and overseas and they both loved going on the bus trips provided by the local banks.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William Gummersheimer and Adele (Woodrow) Fredrick; and two sisters, Betty Cole and Lou Ann Riebeling.

Don is survived by his wife of forty-nine years, Elaine of Steelville, MO; son, Eric Gummersheimer of Overland Park, KS; one grandson, Zach Early; one brother, Willard Gummersheimer of Cahokia, IL; other relatives; and friends.

The Family will received friends from 10:00 a.m. until service time on Saturday, October 23, 2021.

A Memorial Service was held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 23, 2021 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home of Steelville, MO with Rev. Wendy Downing officiating. Special music of

“How Great Art”, “God Bless America” and  "Go Rest High” was sung and played on piano by Rev Jerry Beers.

Military Honors by the U.S. Marines and the Patriot Guard was held immediately following the service at the funeral home.

The Family chose cremation as the final disposition.
