Roger Duane Stone West Des Moines, Iowa Obituary

Roger Duane Stone

Roger Duane Stone passed away peacefully in his home on October 11, 2021. He was born in Bayard, Iowa, on February 7, 1941, to Carroll and Vera Stone and was the third of ten children. Roger graduated from Bayard High School in 1959, often providing comic relief for his classmates in the form of stories and pranks. He thought he should have been the valedictorian, though his grades said otherwise. Roger’s outgoing personality and infectious sense of humor allowed him to make acquaintances everywhere he went. Following graduation, he attended the Iowa Barber College and began a twelve-year barber career in Granger. He started his twenty-eight-year career with John Deere Des Moines Works in 1973 and continued to be a proud member of UAW Local 450 even after his retirement in 2001. He was a master craftsman of classic cars with more than one appearing in national magazines. Roger found joy in his retirement years by spending time with his wife, proudly discussing his sons and daughters-in-law accomplishments, taking every opportunity to bring joy to his grandchildren’s lives, attending every one of his grandkids school activities and extra-curricular events, and cheering on the LA Dodgers. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Reta; two sons, Doug (Sandra) and Chad (Carmily); four grandchildren: Sydney, Jamison, London, and Addison; three brothers, four sisters, and a host of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, Stephen; his parents; one brother and one sister. The family will host a celebration of life on Sunday, November 14, 2021, from Noon-3 p.m. at the Granger Community Center; 2200 Walnut Street, Granger, IA.
