On October 13, 2021, Alice Marie Verhage DeHaan, a loving daughter, sister, wife, and mother went to be with her Lord at the age of 88. Alice was born in Sheboygan, WI on November 25, 1932 to John and Jeanette Verhage. On May 24, 1957, she married John Ira Jay DeHaan and together they raised four children, Dawn, Mary, Mark and David. She attended Calvin College, received an RN from the Blodgett School Nursing and went on to earn a BSN from Denver Metro University. She worked as a public health nurse both in Denver, Colorado and Kent County, Michigan. She also taught in the Butterworth School of Nursing, inspiring future generations of nurses with her compassion and kindness. Although she officially retired over two decades ago, she continued to serve her community both in Sierra Vista, Arizona and Grand Rapids, Michigan in numerous ways until shortly before her death. Throughout her life, Alice had a passion for serving both her Lord and her neighbor. She was amazed by the depth of God's love for her, particularly the gift of her loving marriage of over sixty years with her husband, John. Alice was always looking for ways to share God’s love with those around her. Most of all, she had a selfless way of sharing the love of Christ and it was healing to be in her presence. Alice was preceded in death by her father, John, her mother, Jeanette, her sister Elaine, and her husband, John. She is survived by four children and their spouses, Dawn and Michael Hakkenberg, Mary and David Staley, Mark and Cathy DeHaan, and David and Shashi DeHaan, her sister Evelyn Schaafsma, ten grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. Visitation will be conducted at 3PM on Saturday, October 16th, followed by a memorial service at 4:30PM both in Zaagman Memorial Chapel.
