Patsy (Martin) Dobbs Obituary

Pat Dobbs passed away peacefully and with deliberate grace in the presence of her family on the evening of October 7, 2021, in Olympia, Washington. This followed an extended period of declining health. She was 87. Pat was a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who survived early childhood trauma to faithfully serve both as a devoted military spouse and subsequently as a career civil servant. She possessed an incredibly sharp memory. As a family historian, she readily enjoyed sharing personal accounts and vivid details of important family events, personalities, and relationships. Pat was born Patsy Roberta Martin in Darwin, Oklahoma, in 1934, the only daughter of the late Mary Evelyn Doshier and farmer Robert Clay Martin. She was born into a family and community profoundly affected by Dust Bowl deprivations. After losing her father to unexpected violence just before her fifth birthday, Pat would grow especially close to her maternal grandmother, Flora Maryetta DuPont Doshier. Pat graduated from McAlester High School and married Ray Dobbs in 1953. She supported her husband's Navy career for nearly 20 years to include assignments abroad in Newfoundland; Puerto Rico; and Naples, Italy. Later, Pat built her own career as a civil servant, while also raising her children as a single mother. She retired in 2000 from her position as an investigator with the Texas State Board of Pharmacy. Pat is survived by her three children, Patti Leduc, Steve Dobbs, and Laura Sims; as well as her half-siblings, Arthur Craig Tate, Ross Tate, and Andy Dobbs. She is dearly remembered by her six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Pat was preceded in death by her former husband, Ray; her half-siblings, Andra Collier and Keith Dobbs; and her grandson, Daniel Dobbs. Pat was skilled at traditional American textile arts, such as quilting and knitting. She could recall small features of clothing and their sources from a photo taken when she was a young girl. That exceptional memory enabled her skill as an investigator, as she was able to piece together disparate parts of a story to identify important details or gaps. She enjoyed reading, especially Louis L'Amour and other western novels. Pat loved her black cat Stanley, and appreciated red cardinals and Southwestern art. Her incredible resilience, protection, kindness, and good humor will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Pat's final viewing will be Saturday, October 16, 2021, 10:00 a.m. at South Sound Manor, 455 North St. SE, Tumwater, WA 98501. Please leave condolences or share memories and photos on the Tribute Wall to the left.
