Ada Grey Hunt
<p>Ada Grey Coley Hunt, 93, of Stantonsburg, died October 13, 2021.</p> <p>Funeral, Sunday, October 17, 2:00 PM at Stantonsburg Cemetery. Visitation will be at the cemetery following the service, and at other times the family will be at 202 Tyson Drive, Stantonsburg.</p> <p>On December 30, 1927, our sweet mama, Ada Grey Coley Hunt, first saw the light of day in the Watery Branch community outside of Stantonsburg. Born as the third baby girl to Maude Evans and Nathan Paul Coley, she moved to Stantonsburg where she grew up and lived her entire life.</p> <p>Mama was blessed with a loving family and life-long friends that she so cherished. She was such a classy lady that even in her 90’s she cared so deeply for her appearance that she simply had to “fix up” before she left her home. She was Miss Wilson of 1947 and was so very proud to represent Wilson County traveling and appearing on radio shows, such as Queen for a Day, across the country promoting Wilson County and its proud tobacco heritage. She met the love of her life, Seth Prior Hunt, a sweet and special man from Fountain Inn, SC that came to town to teach agricultural education after his service in World War II. They married and had a couple of kids, a girl and boy. Mama loved life and was the comedian of our family. She had a knack for making everyone smile, making us so often, bend over with laughter, never mean spirited but just funny. She and her group of friends loved playing bridge. This group of ladies would make this card game an event. We began calling this her “bouree” card game. It was such an event that a state senator and future governor “busted” up a game looking for votes. That was the talk of the town for a while. We can’t overstate her love for her town, the many children she taught and loved, her dedication to her church and church family and the many other things she contributed to the community. She was a prim and proper southern lady with a love for beautiful things. Even as her memory slowly dimmed, she could still be quick with a word, if you know I mean! She so loved her hometown that when she traveled, she couldn’t wait to get back and would tell everyone along the way where she was from. She was so very proud of her father being Mayor of Stantonsburg and doubly proud that her two kids became mayor as well.</p> <p>Family who preceded her in death are her mother and father, sisters, Pauline Batts Whitley and Marjorie Ward, and grandchildren, Elizabeth Ward and Rebecca Pope Rhodes.</p> <p>Those left to cherish her memory are a daughter, Coley Hunt Rhodes of Stantonsburg; son, Seth Prior Hunt, Jr., of Morganton; grandchildren, Coley Greyson Rhodes Summey (Brett) of Boone, Allyson Hunt Rhodes Thomas (Brad) of Norman, OK, Adam Forbson Rhodes of Dartmouth, MA, and Seth Prior Hunt III, of Columbia, SC; great-grandchildren, Baron Tyler Thomas, Avery Hunt Thomas, Elle Rhodes Thomas, Poppy Greyson Summey and Brett Taylor Summey III. Also, extended family Marsha Whitley, Jane Walston and Amy Tripp Long as well as the many friends that called and visited mom.
