John J. Carroll Obituary

John Joseph Carroll, 88, died on Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2021, at his home in Norwalk. Born in East Hartford, son of the late Patrick and Gertrude (Sexton) Carroll, he was the loving husband of 23 years to Phyllis (Aitoro) Carroll.  A graduate of Boston College High School and Boston College, John served as a field artillery battery officer in the US Army before beginning his career at Connecticut Light & Power. He worked in industrial sales engineering and energy conservation engineering, retiring from Northeast Utilities as a regional manager. He was predeceased by his first wife of 36 years, Pierrette (Blais) Carroll, and his brother Thomas.

John has been a parishioner of St Thomas the Apostle Church since moving to Norwalk in 1965. He was a volunteer and board member of the American Red Cross, organizing blood drives and donating regularly himself for decades. John was a longstanding member and officer of Rotary Club of Norwalk, and he devoted many hours in retirement to service with the St Vincent DePaul Society.

An avowed sports fan, John especially followed Boston College, the New York Giants, and Boston’s professional teams, whose championships in recent years he thoroughly enjoyed. Always fascinated by cars, he was a lifelong fan of auto racing.

He is survived by his wife Phyllis, son Kevin Carroll and his wife Kathryn of Milton, Mass and son Sean Carroll and his wife Tanja of North Kingstown, RI, as well as his three sisters, Gertrude Burke, Mary Kennedy, Anita Carroll-Weldon and Anita's husband Thomas Weldon. John treasured his relationships with the children he gained from his second marriage, David Aitoro, Donna Aitoro Williams, Maria Aitoro Cataldo, JoAnn Aitoro D'Alessandro, and Karen Aitoro Toth. He took great joy from the blessings of fourteen grandchildren and four great grandchildren. John and his entire family are forever grateful for the loving and devoted care he received from Hermina Hinds for the past three years.

His family will receive friends on Sunday, October 17 from 2-6 PM at the Magner Funeral Home, 12 Mott Ave., Norwalk. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, October 18 at 10 AM at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 203 East Ave., Norwalk.  Burial to follow at St. John Cemetery, Norwalk.
