Anthony D. Tassone Obituary

Anthony D. Tassone (better known as Tony or Pop), 68, of York passed away on October 11, 2021 at York Hospital after an extremely courageous, long, and inspiring battle against Covid-19. He was born on February 9, 1953 in Hammonton, New Jersey. He was a loving and devoted husband of 43 years to his wife Laura, who preceded him in death, and a dedicated, caring dad to his 4 children, Becky, John, Mandy, and Zac. Tony grew up in south central New Jersey working on his family’s blueberry farm with his close knit siblings. In high school, Tony was the valedictorian of his graduating class. A gifted football player, he was the captain of his football team. He was the first person to go to college in his family and attended Delaware Valley College on a scholarship. There he continued to play football and graduate with honors as a salutatorian. He was 2nd in his class and first in his major. There he made lifelong friends. As an adult, Tony spent many years working for some of the leading names in the food science industry. Tony worked his way up from entry level positions to multiple leadership roles throughout his career. He worked for Prince Macaroni, Durkee Foods, Cadbury, York Peppermint Patty, and Hershey Foods. He spent the majority of his career at Hershey in a variety of key leadership roles. Some of the roles included food chemist, quality control, plant manager at Twizzler, and director of packaging. He eventually retired from Hershey Foods as a director, influencing many important decisions and cost saving measures for the company and winning many awards for his achievements over the course of his career. He would often bring tons of candy home from candy conferences or experimental product lines. The house was always full of candy. He had many executive achievements to his name, but was too modest to really share them outside of work. He spent many happy years leading a full and busy life as a dedicated husband, father, father-in-law, and grandpa in addition to being an extremely active member in his community. He spent many years as a soccer coach and Boy Scout leader in the area. He loved coaching and watching his children play sports and spent many happy years cheering his children’s athletic achievements. An extremely athletic person himself, he often would run, swim, or meet a walking challenge over the years. He also was a core influence in creating Freysville Park, which is heavily used by many families for its playground, walking trail, and sports fields. Tony loved yard sales and the art of a good deal. He loved finding the value in something that someone else did not see and reclaiming and bringing back to life things that were considered lost causes to others. Nothing gave him a thrill like finding something for cheap or free, fixing or cleaning it, and reselling it. He was very active regionally in the flea market and yard sale community and built his summer calendar around really good sales where he would have a stand each year. This year he helped coordinate all of the yard sale events for Shrewsbury Markets. He even sold items online while sick in the hospital and made his kids meet people with the items. Tony was also a do it yourselfer and loved the outdoors. He enjoyed fixing and replacing things around the house and helping his wife’s creative visions come to life. He enjoyed reading about the Civil War, collecting trains and baseball cards, hunting, and fishing. He spent many happy hours with his family working on projects, cheering them on at sporting events, and being outdoors with them. His favorite role in life was Pop. He loved to spend time with his grandchildren and watch them grow and would often help watch them or get them on and off the bus stop. He often said his grandkids were his joy, heart, tender hugs, and hope. Tony was preceded in death by his wife Laura Tassone and his parents Anthony L. and Lillian M. Tassone. He is survived by his 4 children: Rebecca Tassone (Steven Harvey), Johnathan Tassone, Amanda Bucalo (Jeremy Bucalo), and Zachary Tassone (Leah Tassone). He will forever be missed by his four grandchildren: Ian, Bryson, Alex, and Via. Tony is also survived by 3 siblings, several nieces and nephews, many close friends, yard sale buddies, and GriefShare friends in the community. A Memorial Service will be held at 4 pm October 19th, 2021 at St John’s United Church of Christ in Red Lion. Guests are asked to wear a mask. In order to mitigate the spread of Covid-19, the family respectfully requests that physical attendance be limited to family and close friends of Tony or his family. Livestream access of the service will be available on the church’s YouTube channel at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCzUwQukZU9nY2VtfLEqi5IA . Interment will be private at Emmanuel United Church of Christ in Freysville. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to two causes dear to his heart: Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Pa,745 West Governor Road Hershey, PA 17033-2304 (https://www.rmhc-centralpa.org/donate/) which helps families with sick children, or PA CASA in care of York County PA CASA, P.O.
