William Artis, Jr Obituary

Mr. William Artis, Jr., 68, of Eutawville, South Carolina transitioned from this life on Monday, October 4, 2021, at MUSC Medical Center, Charleston, South Carolina. William Artis, Jr. was born on October 20, 1952, at home in  Wilson, North Carolina, to the parents of William and Mildred Artis.  William departed this life, into eternal rest on October 4, 2021. William was the eldest of four, William, Renee, Vonda and Michael.

William’s formal education took him from elementary school at PS 11 in the Clinton Hill section of Brooklyn, Junior High School 57 in Brooklyn, and Art and Design High School in Manhattan.  It was at the Art and Design High School where William’s talent for art blossomed.  William later went on to College at The Pratt Institute to further his artistic endeavors, also located in Brooklyn.

It was after the death of William’s mother on 01.19.1983, that he decided to embark on becoming a Paramedic so that he could save lives…and he did.  William not only became a Paramedic, he went on to became an instructor so that he could teach others in his community and in the surrounding boroughs of New York, to do the same.  William also worked with his father William and brother Michael in the family business, B & A Contractors – a roofing and contracting company located in Brooklyn.  William also was employed at DIRECTV in SC, working himself up from call-center representative to VP of Quality Assurance in one year.  William did not show off or brag about his intelligence, he just showed people what he was capable of doing by his works and his ability to remain calm and even tempered, while others became volatile and disruptive.  William was also an entrepreneur and owned, along with his wife Keturah, a merchandising business called KABS.

In the time of gang violence and racial unrest, William, affectionately nicked named ‘Teenie” when he was a youngster (grew to be 6’3” tall)’ by his auntie Mary, studied the Martial Arts with renowned Sansei, Reuben La’ Puppet, to become not only a Black Belt with Red Tips, but also a Martial Arts Instructor.  William performed and competed in the Arts, winning him numerous awards.

Predeceased by his father William (Bill) Powell Artis, his mother Mildred Amelia Artis (DeBerry), sisters Renee Amelia Artis and Vonda Kaye Artis, William leaves to cherish his memory, wife Keturah Gilliam-Artis, his children Christonia, Lemuel (Alta), Garcelle, Joh’nette and Janelle; brother Michael Artis; grandchildren Christopher and Leauntea; great-grandchildren Christopher (CJ), Malia and Carter.  He also leaves behind an Aunt, Ruby DeBerry, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and a long list of friends near and far.

William was a devoted husband, brother, father, son, uncle and friend who always put The Lord first.  It was because of his love for The Lord and a special calling, that William became a Pastor of the Christian Faith.  One of William’s favorite quotes from the bible was “For we walk by Faith, Not by Sight”.  William carried in his wallet, a prayer for protection for himself and his family and friends which reads:

THE LIGHT OF GOD SURROUNDS ME;

THE LOVE OF GOD ENFOLDS ME;

THE POWER OF GOD PROTECTS ME;

THE PRESENCE OF GOD WATCHES OVER ME.

WHEREVER I AM, GOD IS!

  Rest in Peace faithful servant.

We, the family of William Artis, Jr. would like to extend our sincere gratitude for your prayers, calls, visits, hospitality, cards, monetary provisions and all other expressions of kindness and support.  A special thank you to Pastor James Burch and Co-Pastor Joy Burch from the Born-Again Ministry of Eutawville, the Watson family and the SC Department of Social Services for their unyielding graciousness, love and support.
