Gillian Catto Obituary

It is with sadness the Catto Family is announcing the peaceful passing of Gillian Catto, at Maison McCulloch Hospice on Wednesady, October 13th, 2021, at the age of 81 years. Gillian was born on September 20th, 1940, in Ireland to her father Sandy Minnis (predeceased) and mother Charlotte Minnis (nee Storah) (predeceased), and is survived by her brother Bill Minnis (Maggie) in Australia. She was married to her love, Bob Catto, for 54 years, and had 2 beautiful and beloved children: Malcolm (Georgia Lee) and Vanessa (Mac Bertrand). She was lovingly called Gillian by all, Granny to some, and more recently known as "Wolfie" to her four precious grandchildren: Zachary, Callum, Charlotte and Tyson, and her grumpy but loved rescue cat Molly. Gillian was always up for adventure, immigrating to England at age 18 to train as a nurse and midwife, and at age 25 immigrating to Canada, where she soon met Bob. As a nurse and midwife, she worked all over parts of Europe, eventually arriving in Sudbury, Ontario in 1966. At St. Joseph's Hospital where she worked as a delivery room nurse, she helped bring in countless beautiful babies into the world. The next adventure for Gillian and Bob in 1970, was buying a wild, bush bound, rural property on the Vermillion River, that had NO amenities, where they created a lovely home and hobby farm together, now lovingly called "the River House". Volunteering and giving back to the community was an important priority for Gillian, which included: Scout Guide leader, 4H leader, RH Murray breakfast club and reading helper, Health Canada Food advisor and Cooking instructor, extensive Women’s Institute work, frog listening and counting, and Cancer campaigning, among others. Gillian also had many hobbies that included sewing, quilting, gardening, caring for Bob, dabbling in painting often with much trepidation, travelling all over the world, sailing in the North Channel, reading, keeping Bob in line, bowling and gourmet dinner club. She was a lover of life, which included family, friends both old and new, flowers, a good cup of tea and a good book, seeing new things and places, beautiful small details that most would not notice, her home, her roots in Ireland, and her grandchildren. Gillian was known for many things, but especially: being a great listener, having a good chat, a sharp sense of humour, a strong personality, an efficiency and promptness that irritated the tardy people in her life, a dogged determination and strength, a no-nonsense attitude, and a heart full of kindness and generosity. Gillian, Wife, Mom/ mum, Granny, Wolfie will be greatly missed, but as she said as of late: “I see this next step as embarking on my next adventure". Resting at the Jackson & Barnard Funeral Home 233 Larch Street, Sudbury on Saturday, October 16th, 2021 from 3-5 pm. Masks are mandatory. Cremation at the Park Lawn Crematorium. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Maison McCulloch Hospice would be appreciated by the family. To view full obituary, make a donation or condolences www.lougheedfuneralhomes.com.
