Caterina Elisa Garnett Obituary

On October 9, 2021, after a brief illness, Caterina Elisa Garnett passed peacefully at St. Joseph's Hospice in Thunder Bay. In her nearly ten decades, she witnessed extraordinary events: the Great Depression and World War II; the Cuban Missile Crisis and the fall of the Berlin Wall; Howdy Doody, hippies and hip-hop; Big Band music, the Beatles and Beyoncé; radio, television, Walkmans and IPads; three Kings and one Queen of England, fifteen Prime Ministers of Canada and one Trump. Through these and so many other changes, she always showed good humour, generosity and grace. Born Caterina Moro, July 1923, in Thunder Bay, the second of five children of Italian immigrants, the Depression pushed her to work early, picking potatoes and washing hospital floors. Working in Toronto during the war and after, she met Stewart William Garnett, whom she married in 1947. Living in Toronto, and soon both wife and mother of two sons, she continued to work, first selling fashion wear - which sparked her lifelong interest in clothing - and later, Avon. With Stewart's passing, she returned to Thunder Bay, joined shortly by younger son, Richard. Here she renewed friendships with many childhood friends, and indulged in her 'guilty pleasures': bingo and Blue Jay baseball. New friends always followed, and making them was always her greatest talent. Caterina is survived by her son, Ross, and her sister, Elsie; nephew Joe DePiero and nieces Penny (Greg) Stirrett and Donna (Rod) Peltonen and their children. She was predeceased by husband, Stewart, and son, Richard; by parents Joseph and Gemma Moro; brother Albert and sisters Rena Moro and Elena Gillies; brothers in-law Campbell (Elena) Gillies and Ronald (Elsie) DePiero. And by all too many friends. Caterina spent her final years at Chartwell Isabella, and a special thanks goes to all the staff who treated her so well and made those years among her happiest. Thanks too to the caring staffs of Thunder Bay Regional and St. Joseph's. Cremation has taken place. A funeral Mass will be held at St. Agnes Church on Friday, October 22 at 1:30, followed by interment at Mountain View cemetery. Should friends wish, donations may be made to St. Agnes, Thunder Bay Regional or St. Joseph's Hospice.
