Obituary

It is with deep sorrow and broken hearts that we announce our beloved Brian Mickee passed away peacefully at Peterborough Hospice, October 12, 2021, in the arms of his family.

He was the light of our lives and the bedrock of our family, a devoted husband, brother, loving father and best friend. Brian suffered from pancreatic cancer for the past 14 months but he was always hopeful of a miracle and never complained. His positive attitude and ability to push on despite the treatments, is a lesson to all of us as we carry on our lives without him. We are completely devastated and inconsolable by his loss because he had a happy spirit and a true zest for life.

Originally from New England Brian moved to Ontario in 1981 after meeting Nora in Hawaii. A true love story, he started his new life in Canada with Nora. Parenthood became his lifelong passion and his love and dedication to Eric and Alex has been unwavering.

For many years Brian worked as a maintenance manager for Cherney Realty where his good nature and commitment to his job was on full display. He loved helping people, and his talent to “fix anything” became his calling later in life.  Prior to that, he worked as a pastry chef for 25 years, then switched careers to maintenance at age 40. Brian had an incredible capacity to learn new things. He loved his job and reluctantly stopped working when he learned of his illness.

The past year has been the most difficult imaginable for our family and Brian did his best to support us as we supported him. A truly selfless person with a beautiful heart and friendly attitude towards everyone, we will always cherish the good times we had together, and there were so many. Together we loved to travel, birdwatch, camp, hike, kayak, coach soccer, cook, garden, spend time with friends and work on renovation projects. Through our renovation projects Brian’s incredible skills really sparkled as we transformed ugly ducklings into lovely spaces. We are so proud of him in every way.
Our many common interests together provided a welcome distraction from our reality of the past year, especially the beauty and peacefulness of our home and garden at The Farmette. The outdoors was truly our solace during this past year and Brian’s spirit was always refreshed and renewed as we walked and paddled in nature.

Brian sadly leaves behind his wife Nora, sons Eric and Alex, brother-in-law Mike Goll and niece Taylor Menchions, and many many friends and colleagues. Brian leaves a large and very loving family in the USA who have supported us from afar. We love and miss them all so dearly.

We extend a very heartfelt thanks to all our friends whose generosity, compassion and unwavering kindness these past months has been truly touching. We strongly felt their support and love.

Thank you to the Caregivers, Doctors and Nurses along Brian’s journey. They have been so kind, all so caring and all so very helpful. We will never forget them.

In Brian’s memory, instead of flowers, we graciously ask to please give generously to support PRHC Cancer Care Centre, PRHC Palliative Care, Lakeridge Health Oshawa, Hospice Peterborough, or Kawartha Land Trust.

Brian has requested a private family celebration of his life.  Online condolences may be made by visiting Brian's obituary page at www.highlandparkfuneralcentre.com.
