Margaret Ann Given

Margaret Ann Given 82 of Harrison, passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday, October 13, 2021. Margaret was born March 12, 1939 in Lansing, Michigan the daughter of Don Elwood Smith and Mary Ann (Dobbek) Smith. Margaret attended and graduated from St. Mary’s High School in Lansing in 1957. She later attended and graduated from St. Lawrence School of Nursing in Lansing in 1960 earning her Registered Nurse degree. Margaret returned to college in the 90’s, earning her Bachelor’s degree in music from Central Michigan University, Mount Pleasant, Michigan. Margaret had resided in Harrison since 1973, moving from Walled Lake, Michigan. While residing in Walled Lake, Margaret was the pianist at St. Williams Church, Walled Lake for several years. Ms. Given retired from MidMichigan Medical Center-Clare, as a midnight house supervisor her last twenty years of practicing and a total of thirty-three years of dedicated service and exemplary patient care. Margaret gave forty plus years to her community as a piano instructor, pianist for St. Athanasius Catholic Church, Harrison, First Congregational United Church of Christ, Harrison, Gladwin Community Theater and Mid-Michigan Community College Theater and Harrison Community Schools Theater programs. She was a past member of the First Congregational Church Bell Choir for many years and past member of the Clare County Sheriffs Reserves as well as the Dodge City Fire Department. Margaret enjoyed sewing, knitting, crafting, canning, watching murder mystery television shows and collector/reader of many books over the years. She gave countless hours ministering to those by sending cards of encouragement, sympathy and friendship, as well as she took an active role in the St. Athanasius Catholic Church Card making program. Surviving Margaret are her four loving children; Therese “Terry” Andress and husband Bill of Mackinac Island, Michigan, Mark Given and wife Josette of Harrison, Frances “Fran” Matthews and husband Kevin of Holt, Michigan and William “Bill” Given and wife Kylee of Traverse City, Michigan, seven grandchildren; Corey Given, Jarod Given, John Andress, Grace Matthews, Jolee Given, Aleah Given and Pierce Given, one brother, Richard Smith and wife Jennifer of Bozeman, Montana, two sisters in-law; Carol Smith of Lansing and Gloria Smith of Elk Grove, California, plus many nieces, nephews and extended family members. Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, one granddaughter, Ava Given and two brothers; John Smith and Tom Smith. A Funeral Mass celebrating Margaret will be held Friday, October 22, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. from St. Athanasius Catholic Church, 310 S. Broad Street, Harrison, with Rev. Father J. Marcel Portelli officiating. Visitation will take place Thursday, October 21, 2021 from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. with a Rosary service at 7:00 p.m. from Stocking Funeral Home, 165 W. Oak St., Harrison. Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Lansing. Memorial gifts in memory of Ms. Given may be considered to: Clare County Baby Pantry, 211 West Spruce Street, Harrison, Michigan 48625 or Harrison District Library, 105 East Main Street, Harrison, Michigan 48625.
