John Eugene "Gene" McClure Obituary

John Eugene “Gene” McClure age 69 of rural Havana, formerly of Caney, passed away on October 12, 2021 at Jane Phillips Medical Center in Bartlesville, OK.

Gene was born on February 16, 1952 in Twin Falls, Idaho to James Leon and Mary Jane (Ross) McClure. The family made their home in Caney where he attended school until his junior year. He graduated from Mulvane High School in 1971. He worked for both Coleman and Boeing in Wichita before moving back to Caney where he worked for the family’s business Heymann Iron and Metal. Gene then went to work for Funk Manufacturing for a number of years before returning to Heymann’s. He then took over ownership when his father retired and now has passed the reins to his children as third generation owners of the second oldest operating business in Coffeyville.

Gene met the love of his life Patricia Nichols and the couple was united in marriage April 10th, 1976. To this union the couple welcomed two daughters and a son. Gene was an avid outdoorsman; he loved hunting, fishing, racing motorcycles and boats, attending rodeos, 4-H events, and gun trading. Gene loved spending his time with his children and grandchildren and really took an interest in supporting youth activities. He was quick to offer breakfast to anyone who might be visiting and he would cook up a whole mess of food to make sure no one left hungry. He was great with numbers, but rarely remembered a name. Gene was famous for saying things like, “you know whadayacallem, who did the deal with the whatchamacallit” and left you to figure out who he’s talking about, what they did and what the whatchamacallit was. He was a great man and an even better story teller.

Gene’s stories will live on with his wife Patricia, children; Shantayle McClure Clark and her husband Kevin, Bridget McClure Miller and her husband Jonathan, Travis McClure and his wife Cortney, sister Judy Ross, grandchildren; Zarak Clark, Ashten Graham and her husband Taylor, Jacob Miller, Bailey Miller, Stanley Kowalczyk, Natalie Miller, Maclin McClure, and Deaton McClure, numerous nieces, nephews, and friends that have become family.

He now rests with his parents and brother, Terry McClure.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, October 16, 2021 at 1:00pm at Grace Fellowship Church with Pastor GradyMiller officiating. Visitation will be held Friday, October 15, 2021 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm at Ford-Wulf-Bruns Chapel. The family suggests memorials be made payable to the 4-H Livestock Premium Sale and they may be sent in care of Ford-Wulf-Bruns Chapel 2405 Woodland Ave Coffeyville, KS 67337.
