Rev. John Alvin Biggerstaff, Sr. Obituary

Rev. John Alvin Biggerstaff, Sr., age 94, husband of Frances Evelyn Thomas Biggerstaff, of 109 E. Munro St., Union, passed away, Tuesday, October 12, 2021, at his home.  

Rev. Biggerstaff was born May 11, 1927, in Kings Mountain, NC, a son of the late Robert Lee Biggerstaff and Della Black Biggerstaff Stacy.  He was a member of Mon Aetna Baptist Church where he was an Ordained Minister to the Deaf. Rev. Biggerstaff taught the deaf Sunday school class at Mon Aetna from 1957 until 1995, when he became Minister to the Deaf at Mon Aetna, a position he held until his death.  In 1998, he received his Christian Ministry diploma, as a member of the first class of Tri-State School of Theology for the Deaf. Rev. Biggerstaff served as President of the South Carolina Baptist Deaf Conference from 1977 to 1980; previously in 1976, he had served as Vice President of the conference.  For many years, Rev. Biggerstaff was active in the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary’s Boyce Bible school now known as the James P. Boyce College of the Bible.  In Spartanburg at The South Carolina School for the Deaf and Blind, he led the monthly meeting of the G.L.A.D. (God Loves All Deaf) club.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Evelyn King; six grandchildren, Tripp Duncan and wife Mica, Brandy Duncan, William Biggerstaff, Daniel Biggerstaff and wife Jessica, Jeremy Lankford and wife Leslie, and Jessica Edwards and husband Chris; eleven great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and two daughters-in-law, Judy Biggerstaff and Mary Ann Biggerstaff.  He was predeceased by two sons, Johnny Biggerstaff and Ray Biggerstaff and a son-in-law, James R. King.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM Friday, October 15, 2021, at Mon Aetna Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Chris Gulledge.  Burial will follow at Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Tripp Duncan, William Biggerstaff, Daniel Biggerstaff, Jeremy Lankford, Chris Edwards, and Jacob Holt.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 PM until 2:30 PM prior to the services at the church.

The family is at the home, 109 E. Munro St., Union, SC 29379.
