Jim Harvey Obituary

James “Jim” W. Harvey, 88, of Sumner, died Tuesday, October 12, 2021, at the Hillcrest Home in Sumner. Private family graveside services will be held at Union Mound Cemetery in Sumner. Memorials may be made to the family for later designation. James William, son of Charles Harvey and Edna Frances Podesta was born December 25, 1932, in Vicksburg, Mississippi. He was raised by his mother and beloved step-father, I.A. Daniels (Dan). At the age of 14, Jim walked down to the riverfront to try for a job on a riverboat to help his family out. He succeeded at this, beginning a lifelong career on or near the Mississippi River and it’s towboats. He would not retire from the river transportation business until age 79, having served successively as deckhand, engineer, pilot, captain, and port captain for a variety of barge companies over the years. When not on the river he enjoyed classic cars. On August 24, 1974, he was united in marriage with Janet Giese, at Janet’s parents’ home in Sumner. The couple lived in New Orleans, Louisiana and Vicksburg, Mississippi prior to moving to Sumner in 1989. Jim is survived by his wife, Jan of Sumner and children, Brennan (Ly) Wilder of Bloomington, Indiana, James “Butch” Harvey, Jr. of Greenville, Mississippi, Toni Harvey of Panama City Beach, Florida, Bob (Paula) Harvey of Houston, Texas, and Kermit (Lady Margaret) Harvey of Flora, Mississippi and grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Charles; and sister, Mary Louise Guerriero. The man who has seen The rising moon break Out of the clouds at midnight Has been present like The archangel at the creation Of light and the world. Ralph Waldo Emerson
