Lyle Eugene Littlewood Obituary

Lyle was born to Harold and Rena Littlewood on 19 December 1933 in their farm home near La Moille, Illinois. He passed away at his home in The Gardens in Virginia Beach, Virginia, on 6 October 2021. Lyle attended Basswood Corner School, one of the last one-room schools in Bureau County. He then attended La Moille Community High School, where he was class president for three years and participated in many athletic activities, especially track. He attended North Central College in Naperville, Illinois, where he continued to excel in track and cross country. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science (Engineering Science) in 1955, and was one of eleven seniors selected to appear in Who's Who in American Colleges. At North Central College Lyle met his future wife, Marilyn Ruth Weinert. They married on 20 October 1956 in Dearborn, Michigan. Lyle went on to teach at Savana (Illinois) junior high school during the 1955-56 school year following college. The next year he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, enrolling in Officer Candidate School and became a career Navy man. Lyle continued his education while in the Navy, he spent a year at the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School, earned a B.S. degree in Aeronautical Engineering in 1963, and attended and graduated from the Navy Test Pilot school. Lyle served as a Naval officer from 1956 until 1978, and traveled around the world being stationed at NAS Barbers Point, Hawaii; Auburn, Alabama; Monterey, California; California, Maryland; Virginia Beach, Virginia; Lexington Park, Maryland; and Yokosuka, Japan. He eventually retired from the Navy with the rank of Commander. Following retirement from the Navy, Lyle and his family moved to Burke Va. where he continued his career with ManTech and BAE systems. Lyle worked with the Maritime Surveillance Aircraft Team and the NAVAIRSYSCOM P-3 Program. Lyle eventually retired from the work force and moved back to Virginia Beach in 2004. Lyle and Marilyn enjoyed gardening and won the Bellamy Manor yard of the month in July 2016. They enjoyed spending time with their Bellamy Manor neighbors and shared their 60th anniversary with many of them. Throughout his life, Lyle was always giving of his time for volunteer work and contributed to countless charities. Lyle is survived by his three sons, Steven, Derrick, and Jeffery and his two brothers, John and Roland Littlewood. The family will receive friends at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Princess Anne Chapel on Saturday, Oct. 16th 2021, from 12 to 1 p.m. The funeral service will be held in the funeral home chapel at 1 p.m. followed by interment at Colonial Grove Memorial Park.
