Wali Muneer Al-Hameed of Columbus, Georgia peacefully passed away in Fort Dodge, Iowa on Monday, October 11, 2021. He was 83 years old. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Saturday, October 23, 2021 at Prairie Lakes Church in Fort Dodge. Burial will follow in North Lawn Cemetery. A visitation will be 4:00 to 7:00 PM Friday October 22 at the church. Born on September 27, 1938 to Joseph "Joe" and Blessit P. (Durham) Newsome. Wali was the second oldest son of 12 children. In 1964, he was married to the woman of his dreams, Lillie Burnett. They were married for 57 years. He was blessed with 16 children. Wali was a devoted father of 10 girls and 6 boys, grandfather to 55 grandchildren, and devoted grandfather to 66 great-grandchildren. Words cannot express how honorable Wali was as a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, leader, and man of God. While residing in Georgia, Wali worked at Wells Dairy delivering milk. He also was employed with his father as a landscaper in the community. He then transitioned and moved to Iowa with his family and wife in 1969 on a train with the first 5 of the 16 children. After moving to Iowa in search of a better life for his family, Wali was employed at Standard Engineering until the business later closed. He worked at National Gypsum and was a member of the Local D-66 union until retirement. Wali M. Al-Hameed was a member of the FOI, President of Pleasant Valley Lions Club, and a Master Mason member of the H.C. Merriweather Masonic Lodge #46 of Fort Dodge, IA. Wali leaves behind his loving wife, Tauheedah Al-Hameed; sons, Ahmad, Amin (Samantha), Hamidullah (Terri), Hammad (Joelaine), Zakee (Melanie) and Waliyullah Al-Hameed; daughters, Ameedah, Aseelah, Wafa, Wala, Nimat (Raymond) Prewitt, Ziyadah (Don) Al-Hameed Gillis, Mahasin, Zarinah, and Nadirah. He also leaves behind his brothers, Melvin Newsome, Jameel Hameed, and Edward Newsome; sisters, Ida Orr (Ken) of Ooltewah, TN, Diemah Hameed of Columbus, GA, and Celisa Newsome of Fort Dodge; 55 grandchildren and 66 great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Wali was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Blessit Pearl Newsome; daughter, Ulrica Lawson Mathis; brothers, MB Newsome, Lawrence Newsome, Philip Newsome, and Hasson Hameed; nieces, Curtsie Newsome and Angel Hameed; nephews, Daryl Cunningham and Gregory Newsome. Wali loved being surrounded by his family. He enjoyed playing cards, dominoes, and golfing. Wali never missed a teaching moment for whomever crossed his path. Wali loved educating people about real life experiences and religion with family, friends, and the community. He was a motivator, influencer, preacher, teacher, counselor, confidant, friend, and above all, an example for his family to follow. Memorials may be left to family discretion.
