Mrs. Lois Hayes Howerton, 81, of Hyattsville, MD entered eternal rest on Saturday, October 9, 2021 at Sibley Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Hayes-Howerton was born in Boydton, VA to the late Alma Hayes Shelton and Henry Shelton. She was the adopted daughter/granddaughter of Edward B. Hayes and Kizzie Hayes. She received her early education in Mecklenburg County Virginia, graduating from West End High School in 1956. She attended Saint Paul’s College in Lawrenceville, Virginia and received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education in 1962. She received her master’s degree in Sociology from The George Washington University.
In addition to her parents and grandparents, Lois was preceded in her death by her brother, Walter Crutchfield, Jr., and sister Geales Yvonne Crutchfield Grant “Yvonne”.
She leaves to cherish her loving memories her son Lloyd L. Howerton, Jr (Wife: Stacey Bonner) of Hyattsville, MD; her daughters, Timi Howerton-Ford of Upper Marlboro, MD (Husband: Stephan Ford); and Voncea Howerton-Copeland (Husband: Clinton Copeland) of Gaithersburg, MD. Her four grandchildren: Vonice (Pebbles) Howerton, Eboni Copeland, Clinton (CJ) Copeland, and Kobe Copeland, along with her great-granddaughter, Lily Copeland (CJ’s daughter); her sister, Gloria “Cookie” Townsend of South Hill, VA; her former husband; Lloyd L. Howerton, Sr., Cheryl Carter (her stepdaughter) of Bowie, MD, and her children: Jimmy Sydnor, Veneta Sydnor, and Angela Sydnor along with their children and grandchildren.
Mrs. Hayes Howerton’s celebration of life will be held on Thursday, October 21, 2021, at JB Jenkins Funeral Home, Inc., 7474 Landover Road, Landover, MD at 1:30, Behind the Ivy Wall at 12:00 and the viewing will be held at the same location starting at 12:30.
Graveside service will be held on Saturday, October 23, 2021, at St. Luke Baptist Church, 2676 Middle School Road, Skipwith VA 23968 with Pastor Franklin M. Watson, II officiating. Public viewing for family and friends will be held on Friday, 22 October from 2:00 – 6:00 p.m. at Giles-Harris Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Chase City, VA. A mask is required for all viewings and services.
