Obituary

EVA TRACH (nee Didychuk) 1934 - 2021   It is with profound sadness that our family announces the peaceful passing of our beloved mother & Baba on Friday, October 8, 2021 at Heritage Lodge Personal Care Home in Winnipeg, Mb.  Her family was by her side.  Eva was predeceased by her husband, Paul; youngest daughter Cheryl; parents, Peter and Petrunka (Beatrice, nee Remniak) Didychuk; brothers, William (Bill) and Theodore (Fred) and sister Anna Zadick.  She is survived by her brother-in-law Leonard Trach, sister-in-law Verna, cousins and many nieces and nephews.

Left to honour Eva are her children, son Dale (Carla) and grandchildren Brett, Jeremy (Kirsten) and Tessa (Marcus); daughter Adele (Dale Stiles) and grandchildren Tanner and Daniel Jangula; son Gerald (Lisa) and granddaughter Kaylee, son-in-law, John Stewart and many relatives and friends.

Eva was born in Toutes Aides, MB on May 10, 1934, youngest of 4 children.  Living on a farm she had much freedom as well as responsibilities especially when her mother passed away when Eva was just nine years of age.  Gardening, berry picking, housework, looking after the farm animals, rounding up and milking cows, driving cattle by horseback to Rorketon for sale and helping on the field were just a few chores that made life ‘never boring’.  Older siblings and a large extended family made for many fun gatherings, be it barn dances, midnight dances, church services, picnics or just running across the field to play with cousins.  Eva began her education at age 5 at Vadenia School close to her home.  She stayed with relatives in Rorketon for grades 9, 10, 11 and graduated from grade 12 in Ste. Rose.  Eva’s teaching career began in 1951 with a six week permit teacher training course.  She then taught grades 1 to 8 in rural one room schools at age 17.  She went on to Normal School in Winnipeg to obtain her teacher’s certificate in 1954.  During her posting at Mountain Stream school in Keld, MB. Eva met an eligible bachelor, Paul Trach.  They were engaged on Valentine’s Day and married in July 1955.  Together they farmed on an idyllic piece of land north of Riding Mountain National Park and started their family with the birth of Dale and Adele.  Mom valued education as she went on to obtain her permanent teacher’s certificate in 1959.  After moving off the farm and into Dauphin, Mom continued with night classes towards an education degree all while raising two more children, Gerald and Cheryl.  She was a teacher at various elementary schools in the Dauphin Ochre School Division where her students also taught her many lessons and many friendships were made.

Family was very important to Mom.  She kept connected with extended family near and far, organized a Trach family reunion, compiled our family genealogy and documented memories of her life.   Mom was most proud of her children, their spouses and her grandchildren, with their talents and achievements and she wasn’t shy to offer advice on how to make things even better!   Becoming a Baba to love and care for her grandchildren is something she cherished.  She made sure everyone’s birthdays and anniversaries were marked and celebrated, graduations were attended; holidays were celebrated together; she wrote and illustrated booklets for the grandchildren of her younger years on the farm; taught them the fine art of sausage making, how to prepare Ukrainian dishes and passed on gardening tips.  Having the grandchildren at the cabin was a special time to bond.  Seeing their success in their adult life, their strong work ethic, passions and joys, and the addition of their partners into her family brought her much happiness.  She was excited to learn she would have been a great Baba later in the year.  She will be watching over Jeremy and Kristin’s baby Odin.

As a long time parishioner of St. Viator’s Roman Catholic Church, Mom gave back to her church with her involvement in the Catholic Women’s League; to her community with canvassing for charities;  the Communities in Bloom committee, and helped  at the Knights of Columbus special events booth with her husband, Paul.

Mom and Dad were fortunate to be able to see the world in their travels to Europe, Alaska, Mexico, various states in the U.S.A. and throughout Canada from east to west.  Eva helped her husband build two family homes and a cabin which were surrounded by their bountiful vegetable and flower gardens.   She cultivated friendships with her neighbors, extended family, church members, random strangers at McDonalds and while traveling.  Friends and family were always welcomed to her home with her smile and a table set with food from her garden and home cooking. She was an avid Blue Jays fan and she wore her BABA 34 jersey proudly!  She loved the outdoors whether it was in her garden, camping, picnics or fishing with friends.  She enjoyed a good game of Kings in the Corner and she couldn’t contain her giggles during a game of Chase the Ace.

After her husband’s passing and to be closer to her children, Mom moved to Winnipeg in 2016 and settled at Villa Aulneau in St. Boniface.   Here she made new friends and enjoyed the many activities and wonderful entertainment at her new home.  She still made several trips back to Dauphin to reunite with her friends with a meet up at McDonald’s for coffee!    With additional health challenges, she made another move in 2020 to Heritage Lodge Personal Care Home.  Our family is grateful to all who were a part of Mom’s life over the years, friends’ young and old, homecare, her doctors, Heritage staff and friends, her healthcare and recreation team all helped make Mom’s life brighter.  To those who took time to chat, share stories, browse her photo albums, send cards, letters, emails, phone calls and visits, your kindness and care is very much appreciated by our family.  It meant a lot to Mom.

To honour and celebrate Eva’s life, a private service was held on October 13, 2021 at Sneath-Strilchuk Funeral Services in Dauphin.  Father Michel Nault officiated. Mom will rest with her daughter, Sherri and husband, Paul, in their family plot at Riverside Cemetery.   In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to your favorite charity in Eva’s memory.  We were all so lucky to love and be loved by our Mom and Baba.  May she rest in peace.
