James Howard Owens Obituary

James “Jim” Owens age 84, died on Sunday, October 10, 2021. He was born September 9, 1937 in Cushing, OK to Howard and Belle Owens. He graduated from Cushing High School in 1956 and Central State University in 1973 with a BBA Degree in Business Management. He married his high school sweetheart, Mary Lou Lawson in 1958. After completing a tour in the United States Air Force, the couple moved to the Oklahoma City area and Jim had a successful career in computers that included 10 years at Tinker Air Force Base and 22 years at the Federal Aviation Administration, retiring in 1994 as Deputy Director of the Office of Information Services, AMI. For the following 16 years, Jim served as a Management Consultant to DataCom Science’s, INC. and the Chickasaw Nation Industries. He was instrumental in helping both of these companies mature into successful businesses. Jim retired again in 2013. The Owens family moved to Mustang, OK in 1973 where their children went to Mustang Schools and Mary Lou taught in the Mustang School system. They were active members of Chisholm Heights Baptist Church. Jim served as Deacon, Chairman of the Long-Range Planning Committee, Adult Department Director, member of the Finance Committee, and a variety of other leadership positions. Jim loved the Lord and enjoyed serving and ministering to others. Jim always made sure that family activities included the whole family and vacations were always an exciting adventure. He was an accomplished trip planner. Jim and Mary Lou enjoyed traveling in their RV and they seldom left town without a caravan of friends following. They visited all 50 states and most of the National Parks during their trips. He was a great story teller and he enjoyed the opportunity to share his favorites with new acquaintances. They have enjoyed a host of friends. Jim is survived by his children, Rebecca Kay Dobson (and Bob) of Norman, grandson Daniel Dobson, Nancy Owens Curtis (and Carlton) of Washington, DC, grandson Josh Curtis, and his sister-in-law Linda Owens of Jenks, OK. He is preceded in death by his loving wife of 59 years, Mary Lou, parents Howard and Belle Owens, son David Owens, Grandson John Curtis, sister Carol Allred, and brother Tom Owens. Funeral service will be held 2pm Thursday, October 14, 2021 at Chisholm Heights Baptist Church with interment following in the Mustang Cemetery, Mustang, OK.
