Dorothy Jean Jackson-Christian Obituary

Dorothy Jean Jackson-Christian was born on August 9, 1942, to Henry A. and Bessie W. Jackson in Birmingham, Alabama. She left to rest eternally in the bosom of God on October 8, 2021, surrounded by family and friends whom she loved and cherished. Her zeal for all things good and decent in life was unrelenting.

Dorothy received her primary and secondary education in the public schools of Birmingham. After completing these courses of study, she graduated from Ullman High School with honors in May 1959 and entered Clark College in Atlanta, GA, in the Fall of that same year. Here she chose teaching as a profession and received the Bachelor of Arts Degree in Elementary Education. Later, Dorothy attained a master’s degree in Curriculum Development from Atlanta University. Her pursuit of excellence in the best practices in education continued as she received additional certification in the areas of special education, reading, and education administration. She received numerous prestigious awards for outstanding success for her exemplary services as an educator, which spanned her entire career. This journey began in Atlanta Public Schools and ended in Montgomery County (Maryland) Public Schools (MCPS). After retiring from MCPS, she served as a consultant to the District of Columbia Public Schools for three years.

Dorothy's christian upbringing was an integral part of her life until the very end. She busied herself with testifying about God's goodness to her through her music, devotional periods, bible teaching, and bible studies. This fact became increasingly evident as she lived her religion daily.

Dorothy's religious and social affiliations included membership in the Montgomery County (Maryland) Alumnae Chapter of Delta Signa Theta Sorority, Incorporated; the Pierian Foundation, Montgomery County (Maryland) Chapter and Clinton A.M.E. Zion Church, Rockville, Maryland.

Dorothy leaves to cherish her precious memories, her husband William "Bill" Christian, Jr., son, Michael David Christian (Belinda) and grandson, Isaiah Christian, Sydney, Australia; daughter, Freya Christian; two sisters, Addie Jackson Payne, Atlanta, GA and Patricia A. Jackson, Birmingham, AL; goddaughter, Marcia Baker (Vince), Philadelphia, PA; god grandchildren, Kalia Baker, Gaithersburg, MD, Jordan Nathaniel Shepherd-Baker and Jeremiah Nicholas Shepherd-Baker, Philadelphia, PA; seven nieces, Jennifer Jackson Brooks, Birmingham, AL, Cynthia Giddens Hunter (Forrest), Carson, CA, LaRita Payne Dixon (Nathaddis), Covington, GA, Alicia Payne, College Park, GA, Tori Jackson, Southern California, Sylvia Christian James, Sumpter, SC and Juanita Murkey, Silver Spring, MD; three nephews, Alfred Giddens, Jr. (Betty), Lithonia, GA, A. Vincent Giddens (Gwendolyn), Stone Mountain, GA, and Harvey D. Giddens (Wendy), Atlanta, GA; a host of other loving relatives, loyal friends, sorority and organization members, and those she mentored and inspired during her life journey. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Henry Arthur Jackson, Jr., and Oliver Wendell Jackson: two sisters, Estelle Jackson Hollins and Juanita Jackson Giddens, her niece, Carolyn Hollins Chatman and goddaughter, Laura Wood.
