Charles Sid Bergh Obituary

Charles “Sid” Bergh

- 10/17/2020

Charles “Sid” Bergh age 94 of Villa Park, IL. WWII U.S. Navy Veteran. Beloved husband of the late Mary “Billie” and Anne. Loving father of Lynn (Bob) Borge, Karen (Michael) Marnell, Sue (Bob) Joorfetz, the late James, John, Clifford, Douglas and Gregory. Cherished grandfather of Erika (Roman Cardoza) Lofgren, David (PimNara) Lofgren, Nathan (Carlyn Green) Bergh, Nicole (Tyler Gabel) Borge, Lisa (Michael) Schmid, Erica Borge, Michael (Liz) Marnell and Matthew Marnell. Great grandfather of Alex, Ayana, Lukas, Isabella, Amanda, Sean, Mikey and Gregory. Fond brother of the late John (Opal) Foster. Uncle and great uncle of many.

Sid was born in 1926 in Oak Park, originally living in Lombard near his family’s grocery store at the corner of Westmore and Division Streets.  He lived at various addresses in Villa Park, settling down on South Wisconsin Avenue in 1949 when he married his wife Mary “Billie”.  They raised 4 children at that home, Billie passed away in 1976.  Sid married Anne in 1981 (who also had 4 children). They lived in their current home also in Villa Park.  Anne passed in 2008. Sid was a WWII Veteran who was a radio man and gunner for 3 years on a U.S. Navy Avenger torpedo bomber aircraft USS Croatan in the Atlantic Ocean. For many years he was an accomplished square dance caller at Prince Crossing, Four Lakes and Acorn Ridge.  He had a love for roller skating and did so at Spotlight 66 Roller Rink. Sid and Don Swiderski created a couple albums of roller rink music.

Sid’s achievements include being a member of the Villa Park VFW for many decades and has served just about every chair on the local, as well as District and State levels.  He’s been a mentor and surrogate “Dad” to many who filled the chairs after him. He was the master of ceremonies for many VFW events, both inside and outside the confines of the VFW.  In past years he was also instrumental in planning the Fourth of July parades and enjoyed emceeing them in recent years. He was also a member of the Lions Club and the Veteran’s Assistance Commission.Sid was a village trustee in the 80’s and a longtime member of the cable commission.  Hosting his own show on Villa Park’s access channel.  In 2016 he was Villa Park Senior of the year.

Sid never passed up a friendly card game, or the chance to hit a casino.  He also passed on something special to each of his grandchildren, the love of golf, patience, resilience, history, volunteerism, the love of his village and country and his positive outlook on life no matter what comes your way.  Sid knew the most extraordinary history of Villa Park and its community that will be lost forever.  He always told us not to be afraid to try something new.  He could walk into a room and you knew instantly you had a friend.  He had a jovial personality and loved spending time with his family. He touched many lives in his 94 years and he will be deeply missed by all that knew him.
