Sue Whitley Preslar

On October 10, 2021, Mrs. Preslar went home to be with the Lord. Sue was born Anita Sue Whitley on August 26, 1945 to David and Azilee Whitley in Cabarrus County, NC. She was preceded in death by her precious son Whitt in 2011. Having grown up in Charlotte, NC, she graduated from Myers Park High School in 1963 and attended Western Carolina University where she was a member of Sigma Kappa sorority. Before graduating, she met and married the love of her life, Harry Preslar. They were happily married for 57 years. Sue was very active in the community in many organizations, had a love of teaching and was always willing to give of herself to help others. She returned to college at Queens University when her youngest son Thad went to college, graduating in 1993. She went on to UNCC as a Teaching Assistant in the English Department, graduating with her Masters in 1995. She was hired as a lecturer in the English Department where she taught writing and children’s literature. Sue and her family were active members of First Presbyterian Church of Monroe. She served as Sunday School teacher and Bible Study leader, bazaar chair and numerous other positions. She was awarded the Presbyterian Women’s Lifetime Membership in 2015 for her service. Perhaps the contribution that gave her the most joy was forming the Prayer Shawl Ministry which knitted and crocheted shawls and baby blankets for church members and extended family, items for the homeless, patients at the hospital and Hospice and many other charities. Her kindness and generosity touched hundreds of lives. The DAR recognized Sue for this ministry to the community in 2020. Sue is survived by her husband Harry Preslar and two loving sons; Neil and his wife Maria , their sons Gage and Dash, Thad and his wife, Sherry, their children Kaylin and Clint; grandson A.J. Preslar of Charlotte, NC and graddaughters Rachel and Hannah of Fort Mill, SC. ( children of her late son Whitt) and one brother, Craig Whitley of Charlotte, NC. Her grandchildren were the light of her life. Memorial service for Sue will be 2:00PM Saturday, October 23, 2021 at First Presbyterian Church, 302 E. Windsor Street, Monroe, NC 28112. Family receive friends prior to the service 1:00PM to 1:45PM at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the First Presbyterian Church Preschool, 302 E. Windsor Street, Monroe, NC 28110.
