Calvin “Cal” Craig, 88, of Greeley passed away October 7, 2021 at Life Care Center of Greeley. He was born January 22, 1933 in Chamois, Missouri to Chiles and Mary (Jagnow) Craig. Cal attended a one-room schoolhouse in Chamois through the 8th grade. He and his family moved to Greeley when he was 15, and he graduated from Greeley Central High School in 1950. Cal earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Northern Colorado in 1954 and earned his Master’s degree in Education in 1960. He served in the U.S. Army in Germany from 1954-1956. On February 15, 1992, he married Mary Harriman Johnston in Greeley. Cal worked for the Nunn school district one year. When the Air Force Academy moved to Colorado Springs from Denver in 1957, he was the first teacher hired for the Academy School district. Cal had a long, successful career with Academy School District 20. At first, he taught industrial arts in the superintendant’s garage, then served as a vice-principal, and eventually moved into administration. He served as the liaison for the architects and builders of many new schools. Cal retired in 1993. Cal had a passion for serving others. Before he retired, he coached basketball in both Nunn and Colorado Springs. After retirement, he and Mary worked with the SOWERS, an organization of retired people who help with construction projects and various needs at youth camps and other ministries. He also worked as a volunteer for the Greeley Resource Center 60+ ride share. Cal was a member of Mountain View Evangelical Free Church in Greeley. He enjoyed woodworking, golf, basketball and football. He was an avid Bronco fan. Cal is survived by his wife Mary Craig of Greeley, his daughter Kimberly Craig Lundstrom and her husband Walter of Kent, WA; four stepchildren whom he loved as his own: Diana Heitzmann, Timothy Johnston, Dale Johnston, and Lori Johnston Miller; 8 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, his sister Luella Kinnison of Greeley, and three nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his eldest grandson Matthew Johnston, and his brother-in-law Ray Kinnison. A memorial service will be held at 11:00a.m. Wednesday, October 13, 2021 at Mountain View Evangelical Free Church in Greeley. Private family inurnment will take place at Linn Grove Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Mountain View Evangelical Free Church or the Pregnancy Resource Center in care of Adamson Life Celebration Home, 2000 W. 47th Ave., Greeley, CO 80634.
