Milt Montsilos Obituary

Milton John "Milt" Montsilos, 89, of Mansfield passed away October 6, 2021 at his home surrounded by his loving family. The son of Sam and Agouritia Zarcaros Mutchulos, was born on July 10, 1932 in New Castle, PA. Milton was a 1950 graduate of New Castle High School excelling in shop, metal working, and carpentry. He was a member of the United States Air Force serving from 1953-57. On November 9, 1957 he married his loving wife, Clara Louise Zombek, and they were married one month short of 64 years. Known for his strong work ethic, he began his work career in New Castle for the Nobil Shoe Company in Akron, Ohio then on to Warren, Massillon and finally settling in Mansfield. While being district manager for Nobil Shoes, he also managed the Richland Mall location in Ontario from 1969-1989. His attention to detail and customer service was a hallmark of his work career and forged many relationships with others during the "heyday" of "The Mall", which was a community unto itself. In later years during retirement, he would return to the Richland Mall to work at the Kitchen Collection and also for the May Company. He greatly enjoyed greeting, assisting and conversing with customers. He was a member of St. Mary of the Snows Catholic Church since 1969 and during the 1970s and 1980s was very active in the parish with the Fall and Winter International Festival fundraisers, being known as the "coffee man" brewing many, many urns of hot coffee. He also served as weekend Mass usher, and assisted with the Rectory patio Christmas tree for the late Rev. K. J. McCormack. Other than work, Milton had several joys in life. He dearly loved to travel with Clara, his wife, across the states to Hawaii, Alaska, Michigan and Pennsylvania. Many impromptu weekend trips "back home" to New Castle to visit relatives and visiting Christmas shops along the way. His carefully tended lawn, flower beds, and especially beloved "rose garden" continued to be his passion until recent years. His lifelong hobby of metal salvage and scrapping afforded him relaxation as well as the means for life's extras. He and his wife's love of ethnic foods was satisfied on their many trips back home and most recently to Rudy's Strudel in Cleveland. Left to carry on his love of family and zest for life are his wife Clara Louise; children Simone Renee' of Mansfield, and Christopher Sam of Shreve; foster nephew Francis "Frank" Gebbia of New Castle, PA. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by foster brother Joseph (Rose Pesek Gebbia) Gebbia, and sister Rosena Gebbia Barr of New Castle. Friends may call at Herlihy Funeral Home, 173 Park Avenue West, on Monday from 4-6pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10:30am Tuesday at St. Mary of the Snows Catholic Church with Fr. Kevin Moebius officiating. Burial will follow at Mansfield Catholic Cemetery with military honors provided by the Richland County Joint Veteran's Burial Detail. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary of the Snows Catholic Church.
