Leslie Gene Cady

Funeral services for Leslie Gene Cady, 92, Ponca City, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, 2021 at New Point Church, 109 W Hartford in Ponca City with Deacon Dick Robinson officiating. Leslie Gene Cady was born October 30, 1928 in Scottsville, Kansas to Neal and Anna Cady. He was raised in Scandia, Kansas and graduated from Scandia High School in 1948. He was inducted into the U.S. Army in 1951 and honorably discharged in 1957.

He married the love of his life, Delores Jean Johnson December 31, 1955 at the Methodist Church in Scandia. Through this union they had four girls: Charla (Brian) Cross of Ponca City, Kim (Jim) Slovacek of Broomfield, Colorado, Tammy (David) Mathews of Ponca City, and Verlee (David) Wasson of Ponca City.

He worked in Scandia at the Ward Service Station, the Bureau of Reclamation as a surveyor, a gravel truck driver, and rural mail delivery man. He later started working at Hixon and Linbauer Construction and moved to Ponca City to help build the Kaw Dam. He then went to work for Conoco only to retire and work as a crossing guard for Garfield school. The people called him the “waver” as he waved at everyone who went by.

One of Leslie’s most joyful times in his life was coaching his girls in softball. His competitive spirit led them to many victories but his greatest win was the bond he shared with all his players. Over the years he traded in his coaching hat to be the loudest cheerleader on the side lines for all of his grandchildren, great-grandchildren and anyone who adopted him as their grandpa.

He is preceded by his parents, brother Neal Cady Jr., one sister Betty Rasmussen and one granddaughter Chesley Wasson.

He is survived by one sister Alice Jewell, his wife, four daughters, a son adopted in love Rick (Cheri) Johnson, grandsons; Eric (Audrey) Slovacek, Justin and Joshua Mathews, Quentin Cady, granddaughters; Sara (Ashley) Slovacek, Kayla Cady and Megan Wasson, 5 great grandsons and many loving nieces and nephews. Remembrances may be shared online at www.stittsworthfuneralservices.com.
