John D. Conroy, Jr. D.O, 71, of Middle Paxton Township, passed away Monday September 27, 2021 at UPMC Harrisburg Hospital. Born September 19, 1950, in Philadelphia, he was a son of the late John D. and Margaret (Duffy) Conroy. John attended Penn State University, serving in the Ranger ROTC unit at the Abington-Ogontz Campus, and studied International Relations and Russian History. Following his graduation from Penn State, he enlisted in the U. S Marine Corps where he attained the rank of Major prior to his honorable discharge. John attended LaSalle University for his Pre-Med studies and graduated from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1981. He then completed his Fellowship in Oncology and Hematology through Hahnemann Hospital in Philadelphia. A patient-centered practitioner, he had a genuine love and concern for his patients and found great enjoyment in diagnosing and helping them through incredibly complex medical cases. John founded and operated a multi-physician practice, Central Pennsylvania Hematology & Medical Oncology Associates, which supported Holy Spirit Hospital, the Pinnacle Health System and the Carlisle Regional Cancer Center with its services. He also pioneered a partnership within the Central Pennsylvania region to be the first affiliate of Johns Hopkins Hospital. John had a deep interest in flying – piloting his own plane for many years – and established a research foundation tasked with researching hypoxia in pilots. An avid historian, John enjoyed reading and traveling the world which he knew so well through books. He had a huge appetite for living life and serving his fellow man. He pursued humanitarian efforts to help others who could benefit from his expertise. One experience being the time he spent in Mongolia sharing his extensive knowledge surrounding emergency planning and management. This led him to become one of only a handful of non-citizens of Mongolia to receive the Medal of Honor from the Emergency Management Ministry for his remarkable contribution in action dedicated to strengthening the Emergency Management Organization of Mongolia. John is survived by his sons, Sean E. and Christopher P. Conroy and daughters, Julia C. Parkins and her husband, Robert, and Kathryn J. Conroy and her husband, David Robb. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Edison and Jeanne Robb and Liam, Lowen and Anders Parkins; his former wife, to whom he was still beloved, Dr. Jane K. Conroy; brother, Bill Conroy and his wife, Sharon and sisters, Margaret Conroy Liebman and her husband, Andy, Maureen Conroy McCarrie and Mary Ellen Conroy. His Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated at 11:00am on Thursday October 14, 2021 at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church, 6150 Allentown Blvd., Harrisburg, with Rev. Edward J. Quinlan as Celebrant. Interment with Military Honors will be held at 1:30 P.M. at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville. Relatives and friends are invited to join the family during his viewing on Wednesday October 13, 2021, from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. at the Hetrick-Bitner Funeral Home, Inc., 3125 Walnut Street, Harrisburg. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to the U.S. Army War College, 122 Forbes Avenue, Carlisle, PA 17013.
