Karen Havermale Quincy, Illinois Obituary

Karen Havermale

Karen Sue (Ostermiller) Havermale, age 67, was called home to the Lord October 14, 2021 in her home surrounded by her family after courageous fight against brain cancer. Karen was born September 8, 1954 in Quincy IL to Kenneth (Oscar) and Virginia (Punkin) Ostermiller. Karen married Robert Lee Havermale in St. Mary's Church June 22, 1974. They were married 47 years. He survives. She was a member of St. Francis Parish for many years and then later when she and Bob moved to Missouri they frequented Holy Family Catholic Church in Hannibal, MO. Karen attended St. Mary's grade school and graduated from Quincy Notre Dame High School in 1972. She worked at the Green Stamp Store until she started having children, after which she worked at Mc Donalds on 13th and Broadway part time so she would have time to attend hundreds of basketball, volleyball, baseball, and softball games, musical events, scout meetings, and everything else that her children could think to be involved in. Later in life she was self-employed at the businesses that she and Bob built. First at Havetronix and finally, she was the Vice President of NEMO Manufacturing until her retirement in 2019. Karen loved quilting in her free time and never met a piece of fabric she didn't like (unless it was paisley....she really hated paisley). She made dozens of beautiful quilts, runners, and wall hangings for friends and family. She also made over 500 masks during the corona virus pandemic and donated them to anyone who needed them. Her favorite weekend activity was to take a morning drive to the Amish store in Rutledge, MO to peruse the aisles of spices and most importantly the fabric to bring home to her collection or to wander through local garage sales and antique shops. When she wasn't busy in her sewing room, she was supporting the greater good by volunteering her time to organizations she was passionate about. She and Bob were two of the original creators of the Quincy Notre Dame Extravaganza and the founders of the Quincy chapter of Fishing For Freedom. She always had a special place in her heart for "her soldiers". Karen was the most inclusive and jolly person you could ever hope to know. She loved being a hostess and having gatherings of all kinds in her home, and always cooked for an army. When you came to visit her you would always find a warm smile, an open door, a seat at the table, and plenty of amazing food. And if you left hungry it was your own dang fault! She took in any and all stray friends of her husband and kids over the years and welcomed them into her home and heart. If you were a recipient of Karen's affection, you know what a special blessing it was to be loved by her. In addition to Robert, survivors include her three children; Melissa (Dan) Sullivan of Quincy, Christopher Havermale of Quincy, David (Nicole) Havermale of Tolona, MO, and her adopted German child; Julia (Peter) Davey of Hamburg Germany. She is also survived by her two step grandchildren; Madison Meyer and Connor Zulauf. A brother, Kevin (Sue) Ostermiller of Quincy, four sisters in law Sandy (Rick) Meyer, Betty Golden, Barb (Terry) VanCamp, and Pat (Grant) Hilderbrand and two brothers in law John (Diane) Havermale and Mike Havermale as well as many nieces and nephews, all who she loved dearly. Lastly she leaves behind her "angel", caretaker Kristy Hawkins, who was by her side until the end and allowed her the dignity to live out her last days in her home as she wished. She was preceded in death by her parents, Kenneth and Virginia Ostermiller, a sister, Breanda Joyce Ostermiller, a niece Lisa Marie Ostermiller, and her mother and father in law James and Florence Havermale. Visitation: 4:00 to 7:00 pm on Wednesday, October 20, 2021 at Hansen-Spear Funeral Home with a wake service preceding the visitation at 3:30 pm. Service: 10:00 am Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday, October 21, 2021 at St. Franics Solanus Catholic Church with private interment at the family farm to follow. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Fishing for Freedom, QND Extravaganza or Holy Family Catholic Church (Hannibal, MO). Memorial donations may be made online at https://memorials.hansenspear.com/ www.hansenspear.com Hansen-Spear Funeral Directors are in charge of the arrangements.
