Tommy Gene Shuman Obituary

Obituary Tommy Gene Shuman December 19, 1945- October 4, 2021 On a brisk winter day at Ivan Shuman’s sister, Ruth’s home in Colusa, CA, his wife, Helen Shuman gave birth to a son. And so, the journey began for Tommy Gene Shuman on December 19, 1945. Tommy grew up in Colusa, the eldest of three boys, he was followed by his brothers, Bobby and LeRoy. Tommy spent some of his youth working on his family’s orchard In California. Upon graduating, he attended Yuba City College for Forestry, as he loved the outdoors and felt at home. After getting out of college he and a buddy tossed around the idea of joining the Navy; they quickly reconsidered, and the next day, he received his draft papers for the Army. Guess it was his calling to serve our country, which he did with pride. Tommy was inducted into the service on March 2, 1966, serving a 2-year deployment to Vietnam. During his time in the Army, Tommy became a Sharpshooter (rifle), received a VSM with a Bronze Star, and several other medals, badges, and commendations. After being honorably discharged from the Army, he began working for the Forest Service fighting fires in California and all over the country. He arrived in Wyoming in the early 1980’s. In the beginning, he was fighting fires for a while, then began bartending at the old Eagles, where he met his soulmate and love of his life Nannette Ruffing. Once they met, they stayed in touch until they started dating in September of 1984 and have been together ever since. They just celebrated their 26th wedding anniversary on September 20, 2021. Tommy’s work ethic was so strong that he would bartend all day long, going to three different bars in the same day to work. He drove logging trucks, worked for the Forest Service in Wyoming fighting fires, and then began campaigning at Holly Sugar in Worland. After three seasons of campaigning, he became a full-time worker, starting off as a mechanic and eventually a skilled welder. Tommy retired from Wyoming Sugar in August of 2019. Tommy spent his earlier days as a prolific football player, being the quarterback for his high school team, a great baseball player, fishing, loving life, loving the Raiders, spending time with his family, joking, and playing pranks on his friends and family, giving those he liked a hard time. In the past 15 years, his love of horseshoes took over, and he became so good that he won the World Championship in 2019, in Wichita Falls, Texas with Nannette right by his side, and this year, 2021 he won 3rd place in Winnemucca, Nevada with family including his wife Nannette present to see the win! Tommy was a loyal and dear friend. His pack here in Worland were known as the three Amigos. He was a quiet man, but around his friends, he would light up, and the laughter and joy he would bring to so many was infectious. A simple man who only needed the following things to have a great day would be his extra-large fountain drink of Pepsi, a cold Bud Light, a challenging puzzle, and a heaping dish of ice cream. He was a dedicated and hardworking man, who would do anything for a friend or someone in need. Tommy always had a smile on his face and a joke on his lips. The thing that mattered the most to Tommy was his family. His greatest joys were when he got to spend time with any of his children, his grandchildren, and his great grandchildren. Since retirement his grandsons Thomas and James felt that babysitting grandpa on the weekends was their duty and something they all looked forward to. He will be cherished in the lives of his 6 children and family. He is survived by his loving soulmate and wife of over 26 years, who shared a caring relationship that was based on mutual support and a deep love for each other, Nannette Shuman. He is also survived by his father-in-law, James Ruffing of Worland; brother, LeRoy (Diane) Shuman of Colusa; sisters-in-law, Connie Shuman of Williams, CA and Sheila (Carl) Lincoln of Killeen, TX; brother-in-law, “Bud” (Lisa) Ruffing of Worland; children: Deanne Shuman (David Lansdown) of Lake County, CA, Shana Shuman-Parker (Larry Turner) of Clearlake, CA Jeremy Gene Shuman and family of Nevada, Brandy Shuman (Donny Hampton) of Crescent City, CA, Don James Shuman of Powell, WY, Christopher Shuman (Evie Roderick) of Worland; grandchildren: James Ryan Davis, Hali (Billy) Inman, James Wesley Parker, Trevin Strickland, Makensie Strickland, Addisyn, Haisley, Thomas and James; great-grand-children: Alexis, Jaycie, Adrianna, Billy, Paul and Collette; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Ivan, mother Helen Shuman, brother, Bobby Shuman, and his mother-in-law, Bonnie Ruffing. The ending of our beloved Tommy’s life was quick and unexpected. On Monday, October 4, 2021 in Greeley, CO, Tommy Gene Shuman went to join the angels. He will be missed and never forgotten. We thank him for proudly serving our country, as he now rejoins loved ones and is reunited with our little beloved Skeeter dog who will be his buddy until the rest of us join him. Rest peacefully. Funeral services will be held 2:00 pm Tuesday, October 12, 2021, at the Bryant Funeral Home chapel with Justin Pfeifer officiating. A visitation will be held one hour prior to services.
