Dex Walton Johnson, 70, of Hattiesburg, passed away Sunday, October 3, 2021 at Merit Health Wesley. A gathering of friends will be held Sunday, October 24, 2021 at the Hattiesburg Country Club from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. Dex met his future and beloved wife, Rosi Kling Johnson, in the nursery of the Methodist Hospital in Hattiesburg on August 16, 1951 where she was born on August 15, 1951. They started dating in 1966 and enjoyed 47 wonderful years of marriage raising their daughter, Ashley; working in the music industry; enjoying his many hobbies and traveling the world. Dex graduated from Hattiesburg High School in 1969 and attended the University of Mississippi and the University of Southern Mississippi. He served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam era. He was the Executive Vice President and Owner of Mississippi Music, Inc. He was a past President of the Sertoma Club of Hattiesburg and the Raisin Cane Hunting Club. He was a member and supporter of many organizations including, a number of music industry programs, the USM Golden Eagles, the USM Foundation, USM School of Music, and especially the Pride of Mississippi Marching Band. He was a member of the Hattiesburg Country Club and was an avid golfer. He was also a supporter of Ducks Unlimited, Coastal Conservation Association, and 4Ocean. He was a proud Captain and member of the Krewe of Zeus. He was a passionate Green Bay Packers and Chicago Cubs fan. Dex grew up in the music retail business and worked in every department of the company managing several locations of Mississippi Music over his career. He loved all genres of music that ranged from Broadway musicals to Reggae. In his later years he developed a love for Country Music. Dex was a voracious reader and was passionate about football, hunting, and fishing. He will be remembered for his kind and gentle soul and how everyone that met him automatically loved him. He always had a smile on his face and infectious laugh that stayed with you. There will be an enormous void in our life and anyone that knew him especially his granddaughter, Ella Rose, who loved and will miss her Papaw! He was a “Rock Star”! He was preceded in death by his parents, Jim and Mac Johnson and his father-in-law, Ben Kling. He is survived by his wife, Rosi Kling Johnson of Hattiesburg; his daughter, Ashley Johnson (Bubba Corey) of Hattiesburg; one granddaughter, Ella Rose Corey of Hattiesburg; one brother, Bix Johnson (Sherry) of Hattiesburg; one brother-in-law, Bobby Kling (Pat) of Hattiesburg; one sister-in-law, Gail Dubose of Lumberton; his mother-in-law, Ella Mae Kling of Hattiesburg; and many nieces and nephews. Dex was a big supporter and past night patrol of Abbie Rogers Civitan Camp, where the family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to, Abbie Rogers Civitan Camp, 50 Fieldstone, Hattiesburg, MS 39402 or a charity of your choice.
