Magdalene Sekel Obituary

     Magdalene Elizabeth (nee Volman) Sekel was born on June 5, 1924 on the family farm, 2.5 miles South of Lestock, Saskatchewan to parents Joseph and Theresa (nee Nagy) Volman.  Magdalene attended Georges School South East of Lestock.  It was a country school that was 3.5 miles from her home.  She walked to school through all seasons.  It was hard times in the 1930s.  At the age of 17 Magdalene went to work in the Lestock Hospital which was operated by the Grey Sisters of the Immaculate Conception.  She worked here off and on over the years.  In 1957 she worked at Regina Grey Nuns Hospital for a few months.  Her life took a turn on November 30, 1957 when she married John Sekel from the Rockford area.   John was the son of Joseph and Rosie (nee Holhouser) Sekel.  Magdalene and John farmed by Rockford for 40 years.  John passed away on July 23, 1997 at the age of 79 at his home with his wife and family by his side.  Magdalene remained on the farm for another eight years.  On June 14, 2005, at the age of 81, Magdalene walked away from her farm and made Pioneer Manor in Regina, Saskatchewan her home.  Magdalene’s bother, Alfred Volman lived only a block and a half away.  He was God’s blessing to Magdalene, as he helped her get to places like the shopping centre, doctor’s office, and made her life easier.  She was forever thankful.

     Magdalene is predeceased by her husband, John Sekel, parents, Joseph and Theresa Volman (nee Nagy); by siblings Steve, Joe, Alex (Helen), John, Rosa (John) Seglie, George, Adam, Andrew, Michael, Margaret.  Her mother and father-in-law, Rose and Joseph Sekel; brothers and sisters in law, Rose (Alfred) Norman, Joe (Anne) Sekel, Albert (Olga) ((Lora)) Sekel.

     Left to mourn her passing are her two daughters, Dorothy (David) Smalley of Sturgis, SK and Therese (Ernest) Mushanski of Preeceville, SK; her eight grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; brother, Alfred Volman of Regina, sister-in-law Margaret Volman of Fort Qu-Appelle as well as nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

The Funeral Service was held on October 9, 2021 in the Chapel of Preeceville Funeral Home with Rev. Fr. Janusz Bizewski presiding. The interment followed in St. Leo’s Roman Catholic Cemetery, Rockford, SK with Kaysen Sekel, Matthew Sekel, Bobby Sekel, Katherine Prokopetz,  Sara Sekel, Jessica Kraft, Tyrone Sekel and Amanda Bennet          serving as the casketbearers. Memorial donations may be made to Grace Hospice, William Booth Special Care Home
