Gilbert Joseph Benoit Halifax, Nova Scotia Obituary

Gilbert Joseph Benoit

73 of Clearland, passed away after a brief illness on Oct 1, 2021 at FMH with his loving family by his side. Born on March 19, 1948 to Chesley and Myrtle (Wheeler) Benoit. Gillie lived his childhood in Ship Cove Port Au Port, NL before moving to Nova Scotia in 1965 to begin a career in fishing. Shortly after married and had 4 children. Newfoundland was always in his heart, and he made many trips back to “The Rock” over the years. Gillie was a scallop fisherman for 35 years as a deck hand, most of his career he sailed out of Lunenburg at Deep Sea Trawlers. During those years he came across many fellow crew members. Gillie was also a locksmith by trade. One of his greatest passions was spending countless hours in his garage working with wood and his tools. Gillie built many priceless pieces for his children and grandchildren. Gillie enjoyed a good cup of tea with friends and could often be found on the government wharf in the evenings telling a good yarn. Gillie was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion and loved going for a game of pool or cards. Dad was a hardworking, proud and one of a kind. He loved his children dearly and enjoyed spending time with his family- forever in our hearts. He is survived by his children, Janet (Dave), Maitland; Greg (Amy), Clearland; Ann (Jody), Conquerall Mills; brothers Danny (Evelyn); Tommy (Linda) and Joey (Marion); and sister Doris (Stan); 10 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Besides his parents, Gillie was predeceased by his brother Wade; sister Jeannie and son Gilbert “Gibby” Joseph Jr. Funeral arrangements will be made at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to Mahone Bay Legion Branch 49. Special thanks to Dr Newton, Dr Bown, Mahone Bay Legion, South Shore Palliative Care Services and family and friends. The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to all those who have supported us during this time of loss.
