GERARD LINUS MURPHY

(September 14, 1938-October 1, 2021)

With sad hearts we announce the passing of our loving husband, father, grandfather, & great-grandfather, the Great Gerard Murphy of Halifax and Hubbards.

Gerard was born in Halifax to the late Mary (Carroll) and John J. Murphy. He grew up on Studley Avenue, going to school in Halifax and, after his father’s early death, in St John’s, Newfoundland.

Gerard was a class act, a true entrepreneur. He started many businesses, but when he started Murphys on the Water in 1981, he found his true love. He and his family built the business over 30 years, winning Tourism Nova Scotia’s Tourism Business of the Year award in 2012. Gerard loved his life, his family, his flower gardens in Hubbards, and his winter visits to the Caribbean. He loved boats and sailing the ocean, which he did for many years.

Sadly, missed by his wife, Dorothy (Porter), his two sons, Captain Peter Murphy, Halifax & Glen Margaret, and Richard (Helen), Falmouth, and two daughters, Christine (Tim Gentleman) and Catherine (William Doane), both of Halifax and Hubbards. Gerard leaves behind seven grandchildren, Adam & John Murphy, Sarah, Ella & Jessica Doane, Nick & Matt Gentleman, and one great-grandson, Parker Craig; " Special mention to Mairead, Eadaoin and Sarah."

Also mourning his loss are his brother John Murphy (Julia), his sister Mary (Gerald Conrad), sisters-in-law Pauline Joyce, Gloria (John) Simpson, & Diane Minick, and brother-in-law Larry Porter, as well as many nieces, nephews, & cousins. Gerard leaves behind a multitude of friends and colleagues who will miss his friendly convivial presence.

A drop-in Celebration of Life will be held Thursday, October 14, 2021, from 3 – 6 pm at Tuna Blue Restaurant, 167 Shore Club Road, in Hubbards. Please come for a short one and share a story or two. Due to COVID 19 restrictions masks and proof of vaccinations are mandatory to attend. A Private family mass and burial at a later date. Donations in Gerard’s name can be made to a charity of your choice
