Clarence Cameron HAWKINS Obituary

Hawkins, Clarence Cameron

Father, Grandfather, Brother, Uncle

Clarence was born in Fernie, BC, on May 11, 1934 to Alfred and Agnes Hawkins and passed away in Nanaimo on September 27, 2021.

Clarence worked for Overwaitea Foods for 37 years, starting in Nanaimo in 1957, and then in Powell River, where he met his wife, Jessie. Clarence and Jessie were married in Powell River in 1964 and moved to Prince George early that summer “for three months” to run the meat department in an Overwaitea Store. Clarence had a long and successful career as the Meat Department Manager of the Spruce Street and Spruceland stores. His efficiency, good staff relations skills, and exceptional rapport with his many clients earned him the top sales in the province many times. Clarence retired in 1994.

Clarence was interested in the history of BC – especially the Kootenays and the Cariboo-Chilcotin and had a large library of books on these subjects.

Clarence enjoyed hearing and telling a good story, and it was really difficult for him when in 2014, he suffered a stroke, which caused aphasia/loss of the use of speech. His patience with this condition was admirable.

Clarence was always glad to lend a hand and would often cut up game for family and friends. His special boning knife was in great demand.

Clarence was predeceased by his loving wife, Jessie, in 2018, his parents, his brothers Roy, Donald, and Alfred, and his sisters Edith and Dorothy.

Clarence leaves his children Darryl, Karen (David), and Brenda (Chuck) his grandchildren Courtney, Kylee, Olaf, Austin, and Cyanne, his brother, Clifford (Carol), many nieces and nephews, and Jessie’s siblings Terry, Christina, Ian, Neil, and Alistair (Elaine).

A celebration of life will be held in Prince George this coming spring.

The family would like to thank the excellent home care that Clarence received in both Prince George and Nanaimo.
