Manly Magnuson Obituary

It is with great sadness that the family of the late Manly Gerald Magnuson announces his passing on September 29, 2021 at the Shaunavon Hospital & Care Centre at Shaunavon, Saskatchewan. Manly was the youngest of four children born to Eilif and Lila Magnuson on a beautiful afternoon at home (SE 30-07-15 W3rd, Saskatchewan) on January 5, 1933 — arriving before the midwife, Mrs. Sordahl, could get there. He attended Epinard School at Frenchville until Grade 10 and then stayed home to help farm. He married Janet Berglund on March 24, 1954, and together they farmed and ranched south of Admiral until they retired to Shaunavon in 2013. In 2014, the Magnuson family was awarded the Century Family Farm Award. Manly was a committed family man and a friend to many. Well informed and involved in the community, he was a 4-H Beef Project Leader, drove the school bus, served on the PFRA Board, was a dedicated member of the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool and Co-op, and was keenly interested in politics. He served as Reeve for the RM of Wise Creek No. 77 from 1970-77, and his main desire was to bring gravel to every farmyard. He also sold culverts and well cribbing throughout the Southwest for Prairie Steel Products. Manly loved animals — especially his horses, Rawhide and Shane, and his favourite dogs, Dutch and Buddy. He appreciated (and sometimes tamed) local wildlife and taught his children to do the same. He was a big part of his family’s 4-H Beef and Light Horse activities, training calves to lead and helping at local Achievement Days and Frontier Days in Swift Current. Ranching was his enjoyment, and he took very good care of the cattle. As soon as there was a little snow, out came the tractor and bale processor, and the cows all came home when he called. He fed them two to three times a day if it was cold and stormy, along with the help of one his loyal dogs and a cat that followed as “mouse policeman.” Manly prized his Brownie movie camera and projector, taking numerous family reels that he never tired of showing. A devoted “Ford” man, you could often find him in his shop tuning up vehicles while the radio played 24-7. Always ready to joke and tease, he had a great sense of humor and enjoyed a good laugh. He was predeceased by his father Eilif (1964), brother Archie (1964), brother Gordon (1973), mother Lila (1990), sister Frances (2007), as well as sister-in-law, Billie, and brothers-in-law, Walter, Gilly, Frankie and Don. He is survived by his wife, Janet, of 67 years and 5 children: Grant (Jackie), Kim (John), Sherry, Loren, and Wayne (Kelly), as well as 11 grandchildren: Lee (Kevin), Terri (Jarrod), Courtney (Jeoff), Mason, Chloe (Graeme), Breanne (Kenneth), Megan, Danika, Sawyer, Cole (Ashlyn) and Taylor; and 10 great-grandchildren: Alex (Misty), Kyle (Viv), Clark, Ryan, Brady, Nelli, Adahlia, Huxley, Brinley and Archer. He is survived by three sisters-in-law, Rosemary, Freda and Lil, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. A celebration of Manly’s life will be held on Saturday, May 21, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. at Admiral Community Hall with Funeral Celebrant Bernadette Schneider officiating. For those wishing memorial donations may be made to the Cypress Health Region for the Shaunavon Hospital & Care Centre Long Term Care or Avondale Place at Shaunavon, in care of Binkley’s Funeral Service. Binkley’s Funeral Service of Shaunavon (www.Binkleys.com) is in charge of arrangements. Cremation will be followed by interment at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Swift Current.
