Janelynne Massey Obituary

Janelynne Massey, age 71, of Claymont, DE died September 21, 2021 at Christiana Hospital, surrounded by her loving family.

Janelynne was a graduate of the Claymont High Class of 1968, where she was a member of the marching band and a baton twirler. She was one of only a few who were trained in using the fire batons which at one point resulted in a small fire on the football field at half time during a game that her future husband was playing in. Little did they know they would become the love of each other’s lives a short time later. She was also an avid dancer in tap, jazz and ballet in her younger years and always enjoyed watching ballets, musicals and dancing shows. She was a gifted quilter and loved to sew and create beautiful quilts and gifts for her family. She also enjoyed trips to the library and sitting down with a good book.

She graduated from Brandywine College in 1970 and went on the become a Legal Secretary, working in attorney’s office and then the legal department for Hercules for a combined 35 years where she developed a proficiency in shorthand and was well respected by all. Janelynne finished her career as an Executive Assistant at AET, retiring in 2016.

Janelynne was predeceased by her mother and father, Miriam and Russell Fisher, her brother, Ronald Fisher and her sister, Barbara.

A devoted wife and mother, who never missed a recital, game or equestrian event, she is survived by her husband of 50 years, James A. Massey, Jr.; her daughters, Michelle Massey and Marissa Fortner, as well as their spouses, Linda Ramsey and Ryan Fortner. The light of Janelynne’s life were her 3 beloved grandchildren, Tyler, Landon and Audrey. Janelynne was a warrior and although she had her many health battles, her strength and perseverance through it all was a testament to the love she had for her family. Janelynne would always say her greatest accomplishment in her life was her family.

The family would also like to extend their gratitude and appreciation to Dr Banerji and the entire Heart Failure Team at Christiana Care for the exemplary care and compassion they showed during these last few years of her life.

A private graveside service will be held on October 4, 2021 in Gracelawn Memorial Park, New Castle, DE.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.
