JOSEPH J. D’AMICO, JR., M.D. passed away on September 20, 2021, at the age of 74. Dr. D’Amico resided in Wilmington, Delaware, and was the son of the late Joseph J. Sr., and the late Alice H. (nee Falotica) D’Amico. Joe was the beloved husband of Nancy (nee Kitlan) for 45 years. He was the cherished brother of Annette Case (Dean), Andrew J. D’Amico, Esquire (Georgiana), and Jane Gallagher (Edward). He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews, and grand nieces and nephews.
Joe was a 1964 graduate of Monsignor Bonner High School in Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania; a 1968 graduate of Saint Joseph’s College, now known as Saint Joseph’s University, where he received a B.S. degree in Biology; and a 1972 graduate of Thomas Jefferson University Medical School in Philadelphia, where he received his degree as a Medical Doctor.
Following his educational achievements, Dr. D’Amico went on to an illustrious career as a Physician. After his internship and residencies in General Surgery, he went on to additional residencies and/or training for a sub speciality in Colon-Rectal Surgery. Dr. D’Amico was always board certified in General Surgery and Colon-Rectal Surgery, while he practiced as a highly sought after surgeon at Christiana Care Hospital and Health System, in Newark, Delaware for over 44 years. He trained many outstanding surgeons, who have achieved notoriety in their own right. The patients he treated and the lives he saved are legion, and his reputation in his chosen field preceded him. His intellectual curiosity took him to many advancements in medicine which he mastered, including the latest techniques in robotic surgery. He was a leader in Colon-Rectal surgery at Christiana Care Hospital during his extensive career, given his level of expertise and experience, operating upon thousands of patients. It is a sad day for the medical community to lose such a brilliant force in the field of Healthcare. Unfortunately, Dr. D’Amico did not survive a very difficult illness, and his memory will never be forgotten.
