Elizabeth P. Sayles

Elizabeth Sayles, 65, passed away on September 28, 2021 after a long battle with cancer. She was born on January 6, 1956 to William and Shirley Sayles of South Nyack, New York. She attended Hilltop elementary school and graduated from Nyack High School, class of 1974. She attended the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, and got her BA from SUNY Empire State College. In 2020 she earned an MFA from CUNY Lehman College. She was a graphic designer and went on to become a children’s book illustrator, illustrating over 30 books. She was a professor at SVA, CUNY Lehman, and Queens College. In recent years she collaborated with Rick Beyer on several projects based on the Ghost Army, the unit her father served in during World War 2, which included several exhibitions and two books. She leaves behind her beloved husband of 28 years Matthew Dow, her daughter Jessica Dow, who was the love of her life, her brother Michael Sayles (Deborah Stein) nephew Daniel Stein-Sayles, and many cousins, friends, and students. Donations in her name can be made to the Audubon Society, the Ocean Conservancy, or People to People of Rockland County.
