Donald Robert Bursey Obituary

DONALD ROBERT BURSEY 1928 - 2021 As we mourn the passing of a much-loved father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother and friend we also rejoice in a life well lived. Dad was born in Gander Bay 92 years ago and is predeceased by his parents John and Phillipina. Also predeceasing him, his wife Florence (always called Floss by Dad) who shared a wonderful life with him for almost 70 years, his brothers Gerald (Margaret), Raymond (Ivy), Wallace and sister Velma, brothers-in-law Ellis and Cluney. Leaving with precious memories, children Linda (George), Walter (Christine), Diane (Larry) and Robert (Deanie), sisters Jean, Netta and Carrie, brothers Albert (Helen) and Ellis (Vera) and sister-in-law Joan. Dad was Pop to 5 grandchildren, George (Angel), Craig (Lynne), Cory (Nicole), Gerald (Lorna) and Robyn (Luke). He walked miles with each of those babies in his arms, and when his 8 great grandchildren came along, he did the same. He was Poppy B to Nathan, Sylvie (their mom Karen), Clara, Cecile, Caterine, Chloe, Cole and Claire. Also leaving to mourn are a large circle of nieces, (special niece Kim), nephews and friends. When Dad’s sons-in-law came along, he was lovingly called “Skipper” and that name stuck for many of his friends. In his early years Dad loved hunting and fishing, he didn’t catch a lot of salmon but sure enjoyed wetting the fly. He never lost his love of going in the woods berry picking (Mom would “clean” them when he got home). He loved his quad and snowmobile and was heading out for a run the morning of his stroke. He sure missed putt-putting behind Bert, his daily trips to Wood’s shed. He also missed going to the library and being able to read his favorite books and going to church with Mom every Sunday dressed like a stick of gum. To losing a father so young and spending his early years in an orphanage (where a young women named Merle became a life long friend) probably prepared him to meet every obstacle head on, which he did. After he and Mom left their Buchans home he especially loved trips on the Golden Years bus with Mike. There he continued his love of gardening and a bit of woodworking. Dad will be remembered by many people for his musical ability. If you could hum a tune, he could play it on the accordion – yes, even Beatles music. He played with the Buchaneers for many years and it was a treat to hear them play on the radio. He also loved his trips to Fogo when he and his brother Ray would play together. We will all miss Dad every day for what could fill such a hole in someone’s life except all the great memories. “The song is ended, but the melody lingers on…” Irving Berlin, songwriter Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Ryan Peddle of Central Funeral Homes.
