James "Tom" Thomas Bowers

<p><span style="font-size:16px;">&nbsp; &nbsp; James &ldquo;Tom&rdquo; Bowers age 67 of Brookside entered into eternal life on Sunday, September 26, 2021. He was born on March 11, 1954 in Detroit, Michigan to parents Mack &quot;Duke&quot;&nbsp;and Dorothy Bowers.&nbsp; Tom was a graduate of Evarts High School where he excelled on both the basketball court and the baseball field. He was retired from the coal industry where he worked as a mine foreman for Eastover Mining Company, Peabody Coal Company, and Five Star Mining Company. He also worked for Indiana Railroad. Most recently he was employed by the Harlan County Board of Education as a bus driver.</span></p> <p><span style="font-size:16px;">&nbsp; &nbsp; Tom dearly loved his family, especially his daughter Sarah and his grandchildren. He could light up a room with his big personality and quick humor.&nbsp; He was an avid fan of the Indianapolis Colts and the Cincinnati Reds. Each spring and summer you could find him working in his big garden that he loved.&nbsp; He volunteered and was an essential part in the food ministry at his church.&nbsp; He was a member of the Verda First Baptist Church.</span></p> <p><span style="font-size:16px;">&nbsp; &nbsp; Tom is preceded in death by his mother Dorothy Ellis Bowers. He is survived by daughter Sarah Bowers of Jacksonville Florida, his father Mack &quot;Duke&quot; Bowers of Nicholasville, brother Jerry (Rhonda) Bowers of Brookside, sisters Sharon (Mark) Thornburg of Nicholasville, and Kim (Randy) Williams of Cumberland, grandchildren Hailey, Ethan, Mason, and Madison of Jacksonville, Florida.&nbsp; He is survived by nieces and a host of family and friends.</span></p> <p><span style="font-size:16px;">&nbsp; &nbsp; A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, Oct 2 at 2:00 pm. Family and friends will be at the outdoor shelter of Verda First Baptist Church with Reverend Danny McCreary officiating.&nbsp; &nbsp;<br /> &nbsp; &nbsp; Family requests social distancing and wearing of masks.</span></p> <p><span style="font-size:16px;">&nbsp; &nbsp; In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Tom may be made to the food ministry of the Verda First Baptist Church, P.O.
