Thomas Neil Delgaty Minnedosa, Manitoba Obituary

Thomas Neil Delgaty

On September 26th, 2021 our family patriarch peacefully gained his heavenly wings, six months short of his 100th birthday.

Thomas Neil Delgaty was born in Turtleford, Saskatchewan on March 9th, 1922. One of six children born to parents Edith and James.

He was predeceased by son Dale (1992), daughter in law Linda (1994) and his beloved wife of 72 years Evelyn (2015).

Left to cherish many wonderful moments and memories are daughter Doreen, son Randy (Sherry), daughter Marie, twelve grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.

An active and passionate community oriented person, Tom was a leader to so many people in many, many roles. His involvement with an endless number of community organizations - from Boy Scouts, 4-H clubs, ALTS, agricultural societies, horticultural societies, church groups, veterans groups and many community events brought him much satisfaction, made us very proud. These opportunities gave Tom and the whole family a multitude of connections, friendships and experiences - from trips to education opportunities. The list of groups Tom was apart of is extensive.

Tom received his entire education from his own father in a one room school, right through to grade 12.

On August 29th, 1941 Tom enlisted in the R.C.A.F. A dreaming of becoming a pilot. Though that dream was never realized he did serve with the Air Force as a mechanic.

In 1942, Tom met Evelyn Jury. On February 6th, 1943 they were married and Tom left for overseas a few days later to serve his country. When he returned in 1945, he worked for the Canadian Bank of Commerce for a few years and they started a family.

In 1948, they moved the family to the Minnedosa area putting down the roots that still hold true and deep. They started the family farm which became their life in various forms for the rest of his life.

The dairy herd was dispersed in 1973 when Tom began a new career path enrolling in Saint Andrew’s Theological College in Saskatoon SK. He was ordained into the Pastoral Charge of the United Church of Canada in June 1978, serving the communities of Oak River and Crandall Manitoba until he semi-retired back to the farm in Minnedosa in 1990. The lifelong friendships created in those communities were precious to Tom and Evelyn.

Retirement gave them the opportunity to spend countless hours with family and friends. Endless hours of volunteering and helping others made them very well known in the community.

Their massive gardens and a love for the feel of their hands in the dirt provided many of us with huge beautiful gladiola arrangements and tasty homegrown meals. They love to share the fruits of their labour.

One project Tom and Evelyn worked on together was that they collected, organized, typed and had published a book of Veterans Military Memories. A project he was continuously working on as he updated each veterans story in is own copy as they passed on.

He was a true gentleman. Always humble and kind. You could not help but stop and listen when he told a story - and he had a lot of stories!! He like to ask if he’d told you this story before he got started – not that it stopped him from telling you again.

We cannot put into words the appreciation we have for all his wisdom and for the time we were so blessed to have. A private graveside service will be held the at Minnedosa Cemetery. If so desired, donations may be made to the Minnedosa Agricultural Society or a charity of your choice.

White’s Funeral Home – Minnedosa in charge of arrangements. www.whitesfh.ca

In loving memory. We loved visiting Tom & Evelyn, always so hospitable and gracious. My mom (Ruth Davidson) was Evelyn's cousin, and she adored Tommy. And our thoughts and love to Marie.
