Arthur Stoddard Johnson, III, of Saint Albans, Vermont, formerly of Toledo, Ohio, died on September 22, 2021. He was born August 26, 1922 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was the grandson of Arthur S. Johnson and Jennie Blake Johnson of Boston, Massachusetts, and the son of Arthur S. Johnson, Jr. and Helen Davis Johnson of the Boston area. He graduated from Wilbraham Academy in Wilbraham, Massachusetts, then entered Middlebury College in Middlebury, Vermont in the class of 1944. Mr. Johnson's college career was interrupted by service in World War II in the U.S. Army Air Force, Air Transport Command. He served as a flight radio operator stationed in California, making trips to Asia and Europe. He was based for a time in Hawaii and New Guinea before ending his service in General Douglas MacArthur's General Headquarter flight section stationed in Tokyo, Japan. Returning to Middlebury College in 1946, Mr. Johnson met Leonore Jenkins, also a member of the Class of 1944, who was finishing a Master's degree in Spanish. They were married in June 1947. After Mr. Johnson's graduation in 1949, the Johnsons moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan, where Mr. Johnson entered the Public Administration Master's degree program at the University of Michigan. Upon receiving his degree, the Johnsons moved to Kansas City, Missouri, where he was an intern in the city's Research and Budget Department. In 1952, Mr. Johnson was appointed the first city manager of Westchester, Illinois and in 1957 he became the first city manager of Greenville, Illinois. In 1961, the Johnsons moved to Toledo, Ohio where he became the Executive Secretary of the Greater Toledo Municipal League. Later he was appointed Toledo City Auditor by Mayor John Potter. In 1968, he became Associate Director of Budget and Finance of the Economic Opportunity Planning Association of Greater Toledo, Inc., a position he held until his retirement in 1992. Besides his career in public service, Mr. Johnson was dedicated to working on issues of racial and social justice, world peace, and environmental protection. He would often pick up and carry home litter on his daily runs. He was a very avid outdoorsman and lover of nature. He was a sailor, bicyclist, hiker, skier, tennis player, and runner. He was a member of the Nahant Dory Club in his youth, and later the Jolly Roger Yacht Club in Toledo. He completed thirteen marathons, including Boston, and was the director or associate director of the Glass City Marathon in Toledo from 1972 to 1980. He also was an artist, photographer, writer, and genealogist. He passed on his love of the natural world to his children and grandchildren as part of his dedication to their healthy and happy upbringing. Mr. Johnson was predeceased by his brothers, Frank Davis Johnson and Samuel Wolcott Johnson. He is survived by his wife of 74 years, Leonore Johnson, currently of Saint Albans, Vermont; his children Lawrence Blake Johnson (Susan) of Baltimore, Maryland, Anne Johnson Cummings (James) of Westford, Vermont, and Robert Howe Johnson (Nancy) of Satsuma, Florida; grandchildren Jonathan Cummings (Lauren) of Nottingham, New Hampshire, Lauren Grimmer (Bill) of Tampa, Florida, and Daniel Cummings (fiance Katie) of Norwich, Connecticut; and two great-grandchildren, Eleanora and Emma Grimmer. A memorial service and interment with Military Honors will take place Friday March 25, 2022 at 11:00 AM in Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
