Ned Andrew Jones

Ned Andrew Jones, age 72, passed away peacefully surrounded by his wife and daughters on September 24, 2021 at the Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, SD after a short battle with liver and lung disease. He was born January 14, 1949 to Frederick and Margaret Donahue Jones in Worthington, MN. He attended Round Lake School in Round Lake, MN and graduated in 1967. After high school he attended college at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis until he voluntarily drafted into the Army to enlist for the Vietnam War. He entered the Army in October 1969 and completed basic training at Fort Lewis, Washington. He served with the Army Infantry and received the Army Commendation Medal, the Air Medal, and the Combat Infantry Badge. He returned from the Vietnam War in May 1971. He then attended another year at the University of Minnesota before returning to Round Lake to work at the family owned business, Farmers State Bank. On May 1, 1976 Ned was united in marriage to Susan Ling in Worthington, MN. Ned and Susan raised their 4 daughters together in Ned’s family home, which they lived in until the time of his passing. In 1987 Ned opened Farmers Insurance Agency and Ned A. Jones Real Estate, in Round Lake. His wife, Susan, was his long-time secretary. Ned was a member of the American Legion Post 461 for 50 years where he served as Adjutant, Commander, and Service Officer. He has served on the Client Community Services, Inc. (CCSI) board for many years. He also served on the Round Lake City Council for several years and served as Mayor of Round Lake for some of those years. He was baptized into the Catholic faith as an infant. In 1989 he was immersed at the Worthington Christian Church, where he is still a member today. Ned loved running the country roads by Iowa lake, spending time at his lake home on Big Spirit in Spirit Lake, IA, sitting in his brother’s hot tub, playing piano and he taught himself to play guitar. He also enjoyed speaking to the Vietnam class at the Sioux Valley-Round Lake-Brewster High School, golfing and attending all of his children’s and grandchildren's school and sporting events. Ned enjoyed nothing more than cheering on his Minnesota Vikings and Minnesota Gophers sports teams. He was also an avid bowler, participating in a league in Worthington for 30 plus years. Ned is survived by his wife of 45 years, Susan, of Round Lake, MN. Their 4 daughters, Emily (John) Ahrenstorff, Sioux Valley, MN, Jayne (Mark) Brouwer, Sioux Falls, SD, Trisha (Brian) Smith, Sioux Falls, SD, and Jocelyn (Chris) Bauer, Lakefield, MN. Their 9 grandchildren, Lucas and Mason Ahrenstorff, Mallory, Isabella, and Haidyn Oye, Carson and Keegan Smith and Jillian and Hatty Bauer. He is also survived by 3 step-grandchildren, Kaylee, Faith, and Devon Brouwer. One brother, Frederick Joseph Jones and his wife Cathie, of Round Lake, MN. Mother-in-law Mildred Ling, Worthington, MN. Brothers-in-law and their spouses, Wayne (Tammy) Ling, Worthington, MN, Lyle (Cynthia) Ling, Torrance, CA, Kenneth (Julie) Ling, Breezy Point, MN and Ronald (Diane) Ling, Lakewood, CA. Sister-in-law, Patricia Jones, Okoboji, IA. Numerous nieces and nephews, family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents, his father-in-law Donald Ling, and one brother, Don Jones. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 28, 2021, from 5:00-8:00 pm at Benson Funeral Home in Worthington, MN. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, September 29, 2021, at 11:00 am, at the Worthington Christian Church. Burial with full military rights to follow at the Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Worthington, MN. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be given in Ned’s honor to the American Legion Post 461 in Round Lake, CCSI in Worthington, or the Worthington Christian Church. Benson Funeral Home in Worthington is in charge of the arrangements.
